I enjoyed the story arc. I hope the story will continue, and not leave us hanging. Who is the visitor from the past? Narrator was good.

From the day she watched her kindergarten teacher drop dead during a dramatic telling of Peter Rabbit, Clover Brooks has felt a stronger connection with the dying than she has with the living. We are all dying, but living is the key
Revisado: 06-12-23
If you are hesitant about a book that deals with dying, don't be. I was a hospice nurse for a couple of years during my nursing career, and this is a book about living, not the dying process. Clover, as you will quickly learn, is a sad child inside, able to help others find comfort and make peace (or as much peace as they can) during the process of dying with their life. A patient who had been given six months to live was well into his second year of "dying" when I met him. His regret? "If I had known I was going to live this long, I would have done more living instead of waiting to die." He lived for another year after that, and I have never forgotten those words. It was what he didn't do, didn't experience, that he regretted. If you don't find some meaning in Clover's story of death and, ultimately, life, I would truly be surprised! The performance is very good also.

Excellent writing
Revisado: 05-27-23
I have been reading this author for years, and her stories are well written, taut with psychological twists and turns, and usually things I have never seen coming. Even unlikable characters become human in her skillful writing. Then, there is the violence, usually directed at women. If it was too much in paper form or on a kindle screen I have learned to skim over it. Since listening to the Audible renditions, I find myself unable to do that. After being a nurse for most of my adult life, I have seen many facets of human callousness, mental health problems, abused human beings, addiction, and even evil. I can watch Criminal Minds and not have nightmares, for example (which amazes my adult children). But, beware - when the torture is described, it is graphic and hard to listen to. I 'm sure it could be even worse, but I would rather not go down that road. I understand the reality of the horror the author is describing, but just as one character says that you can't "unsee" something, hearing about it is difficult, too. If you are triggered by such, you might want to skip ahead to the end of that chapter. As a long-time reader, I know that this unflinching writing is not for everyone. Except for a time when I "broke up " with this author over a character she killed off (which I eventually pretty much got over), I read and listen to her books because they are GOOD. This book is excellent.

A girl with a secret. Longbill Beach, 1982. Emily Vaughn gets ready for the prom. And by the end of the evening, that secret will be silenced forever. Forty years later, Emily’s murder remains a mystery. Her tight-knit group of friends closed ranks; her respected, wealthy family retreated inwards; the small town moved on from her grisly attack. But all that’s about to change.

Better than the first book
Revisado: 05-22-23
I was drawn in immediately into the story. Andrea's character has finally found her way in life. The mystery was a good one. I didn't figure out who the killer was until the chapter where it was revealed. Violence against women (or anyone) is never downplayed in Slaughter's books. The narration was excellent.

Nora Stephens' life is books—she’s read them all—and she is not that type of heroine. Not the plucky one, not the laidback dream girl, and especially not the sweetheart. In fact, the only people Nora is a heroine for are her clients, for whom she lands enormous deals as a cutthroat literary agent, and her beloved little sister Libby.

I loved this story!
Revisado: 03-25-23
This book unfolds into a world you want to be part of. The grandmother, who is bigger than life, is yet drifting away. A handsome man who is as good inside as he is outside. The best friend you could spend all day with, just laughing and talking. By the end I shed tears, smiled, and felt enveloped in a warm hug. I discovered audible books after eye surgery, desperately wanting to continue my nightly reading, but, not able to at the time. Rich voices and acting are a gift that is shared in books like this. It was a joy to listen to this one.

I found this book to be insightful, moving and well written. I listened to it for hours at a time. The mystery plays out well. Some of the material is very realistic without being overly graphic. I admit I cried during the final chapters. Be sure to listen to the author's note at the end.

Even better listening to it than when I read the book. I had forgotten how much I loved Jeffrey. But, I like Will. He has qualities that are better for Sarah. That was Jeffrey's flaw. A good, twisted mystery, the way only Karin Slaughter writes them.
