Dan Simmons is a really brilliant writer, but I feel like he got too enthralled with the characters to tell a good story. All the characters are well thought out, and the suspensful moments are truly nail-biting, but the plotting outside that is super slow. it would have been fantastic had it been half the length

The narration is good except the narrator clearly isn't well versed in the history because he keeps mispronouncing certain names. But my overall issue is the actual author: he basically condemns the leaders of the church for *gasp* not allowing democracy when it comes to theology. He likes to blame Theodotius, but is either ignorant (or doesn't add to it because it proves him wrong) that such a thing happened since the first century. Justin Martyr, Irenasus, Cyrian of Alexandria (just to name a few) believed that theology and our understanding of Christ was set forth by the Apostles thru the Scriptures and were not up for debate (despite them not being as thoughtout pist-Nicea). He when he celebrates Origen, he ignores the fact that Origen believed Christian Gnostics were heretics.

He claims to be unbiased yet truly is not, and his constant condemnation of the early Church for not being Greek philosophers enough got so grating I couldn't finish it.

His facts are accurate, so it wouldn't be a bad start for a beginner, but check your biases at the door

Not very good, more narrative non-fiction than a study of the serial killer in question

Good story, not the best narrator

I love the story of John Brown, so I thought I'd get this. while the story is great and is from the pov of one of his sons, the narrator wasn't that good. It's not that he's a bad narrator, he s a very slow talker. I usually have the reading speed up to 1.5, but even then he was a slow talker. I had to crank it up to 1.8 so that he sounded like a normal human.

still, check it out for the great story
