The power of suggestion
Revisado: 10-10-24
Provides evidence through interesting personal stories using magic and hypnotism tricks that we should use the power of suggestion and placebo effects to help people overcome illnesses. If you fool people for good it should be considered ethical.

Challenging and worthwhile
Revisado: 01-17-19
This book addresses the logic used in discussing many recent social issues and thus some people may take offense when flaws in their position are pointed out. I think challenging your beliefs is good and if they cannot stand up to logic they should change or better reasons must be found. This book is what we need to get beyond talking past each other and getting to the core issues so we can understand each other better. Recommended.

Historia
The Emperor of All Maladies reveals the many faces of an iconic, shape-shifting disease that is the defining plague of our generation. The story of cancer is a story of human ingenuity, resilience, and perseverance but also of hubris, arrogance, paternalism, and misperception, all leveraged against a disease that, just three decades ago, was thought to be easily vanquished in an all-out "war against cancer".

A humbling reminder for doctors
Revisado: 08-06-18
This book should be read by all doctors to remind them of how much medicine changes with time. Some of the previous practices that were thought to be helpful are now completely discredited. It's fascinating to learn how these changes occurred, and how much resistance there was. The topic is not in the least cheerful, but somehow the author is able to maintain a sense of hope.

Excellent sketches of patients and their issues
Revisado: 11-01-17
The author reduces patients to short stories, but in a good way, by capturing their essence in a humanistic way that shows he obviously cares deeply for them. Even though I don't agree with all of the author's theories (like that you can tell very much about someone from a dream) or think that everyone really could afford to spend so much on treatment (hundreds of hours of chatting per patient), this book is much better than I expected, and worth a listen to get an insight in how others experience life and give us a better understanding and tolerance of others.

Historia
In The Brain That Changes Itself, Norman Doidge described the most important breakthrough in our understanding of the brain in 400 years: the discovery that the brain can change its own structure and function in response to mental experience - what we call neuroplasticity. His revolutionary new book shows, for the first time, how the amazing process of neuroplastic healing really works. It describes natural, noninvasive avenues into the brain provided by the forms of energy around us.

Anecdotal evidence is not science
Revisado: 03-22-15
I enjoyed the first book more. This book is filled with a non critical report of anecdotes. Many of the techniques reported in this book have not been successful in rigorous controlled studies and I wish the author had been a bit more cautious in championing some of these methods.
