Historia
Hercule Poirot's quiet supper in a London coffeehouse is interrupted when a young woman confides to him that she is about to be murdered. She is terrified - but begs Poirot not to find and punish her killer. Once she is dead, she insists, justice will have been done. Later that night, Poirot learns that three guests at a fashionable London Hotel have been murdered, and a cufflink has been placed in each one’s mouth. Could there be a connection with the frightened woman?

great story, meh poirot
Revisado: 01-07-24
the story was clever and had some great twists in it. Poirot's speaking. style was close enough, but his personality didn't feel right. he wouldn't have become so concerned about a stranger for example.

Historia
High-powered businesswoman Lana Rubicon has a lot to be proud of: her keen intelligence, impeccable taste, and the L.A. real estate empire she’s built. But when she finds herself trapped 300 miles north of the city, convalescing in a sleepy coastal town with her adult daughter Beth and teenage granddaughter Jack, Lana is stuck counting otters instead of square footage—and hoping that boredom won’t kill her before the cancer does.

Not as advertised.
Revisado: 11-01-23
The description when I read it called the book lighthearted. That part has since been taken out, which is good because there is nothing lighthearted about this book. It is still advertised as "The Gilmore Girls but with murder." Except for the fact that there were three generations of women it didn't feel anything like TGG. Not funny, not fast paced, not witty.
I found it boring and somewhat depressing. The narration, however, was excellent.

Historia
Toni and Agatha are in the car on the way to Officer Bill Wong’s long-awaited wedding when, much to their shock, a naked young man bursts through a hedge on the side of the road and comes running toward them. Terrified, he explains that he has just seen a dead body in the woods. Toni lends him an old t-shirt to cover himself, Agatha calls the police, and the young man takes them to the spot where he saw the body, across from a meadow where the Mircester Naturist Club is due to have its annual summer barbecue.

Frustrating
Revisado: 02-06-23
While some of the book, such as the description of Carsley and the style of writing, is pretty close to that of MC Beaton, Agatha is not the same Agatha that I've known for 31 books. The real Agatha would never stick her tongue out at someone, and would never escalate a conflict between herself and Wilkes. Charles would never call her sweetie.
throughout the first 31 or so books MC Beaton created an arc in which Charles becomes the kind one and James is revealed to be a jerk. The new author reverses it and it's just not believable. he makes Charles somewhat unkind and makes Agatha way too jealous of his girlfriends, which she really wasn't in the rest of the series.
still there is enough there similar to the original books that it gave me a much-needed dose of Agatha. I probably will read any forthcoming books, but please, please try to make Agatha more like she was before. you can start by having her not stick out her tongue.

Historia
Private detective Agatha Raisin, having recently taken up power-walking, is striding along a path in Mircester Park during her lunch break when she hears a cry for help. Rushing over, she finds an elderly couple, Mr. and Mrs. Swinburn, in the middle of the green — with the body of an old man lying at their feet.

I cringed throughout.
Revisado: 02-05-23
this book, written by RW Green after MC Beaton's death, feels like a bit of a betrayal of the series that was really written by Beaton.
not only does the plot renege on the last several books that worked to set up a romance between Charles and Agatha but also Agatha's character is not the same. Gone is the woman who can't help but believe in romance. In this book she's just cynical. Gone is the witty, composed woman who responded to insults with well chosen words. Agatha would never ever kick somebody in the shin if she didn't need to.
I'm going to listen to the final book in the hope that she and Charles will end up together after all. seems highly unlikely but hopes springs eternal.
One of the things that bothers me the most is how Roy's motivation for helping Agatha changed from publicity seeking to wanting to help solve a murder. while of course it's a more palatable portrayal of Roy you can't just change an entire character like that.
And then the small things that several people noted about the last book: Why wasn't Doris taking care of the cats? What happened to Phil? since when does James call Agatha " sweetie" Roy style.
I will give credit to the author in that he does keep the same writing style of the books and some of the characters seemed exactly the same, such as Bill, Toni, and Gustav. if only it could have been so for the main characters.

Historia
Andrew Yancy—late of the Miami Police and soon-to-be-late of the Monroe County sheriff’s office—has a human arm in his freezer. There’s a logical (Hiaasenian) explanation for that, but not for how and why it parted from its shadowy owner. Yancy thinks the boating-accident/shark-luncheon explanation is full of holes, and if he can prove murder, the sheriff might rescue him from his grisly Health Inspector gig (it’s not called the roach patrol for nothing).

Narrator was absolutely fine
Revisado: 11-15-22
I shied away from buying this book for weeks because of the negative reviews about the narrator, but I thought he was absolutely fine. he did a good job.
the book is typical Carl Hiaasen. less violent than most so therefore in my opinion better than most.

Once a hotshot investigative reporter, Jack Tagger now bangs out obituaries for a South Florida daily, "plotting to resurrect my newspaper career by yoking my byline to some famous stiff". Jimmy Stoma, the infamous front man of Jimmy and the Slut Puppies, dead in a fishy-smelling scuba "accident", might be the stiff of Jack’s dreams - if only he can figure out what happened.

my favorite Hiaasen so far
Revisado: 11-03-22
I love Hiaasen's books but I don't like the violence in most of them or the plethora of reprehensible characters. In some the protagonist is even unlikable.
In this book there are some villains but they're not cartoonish and while there is some violence it's not graphic.
Of course it probably helps that I too am a journalist but I really appreciate the humor without the gore.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

mispronunciation of Jack LaLanne drove me nuts
Revisado: 08-23-22
it was a great book. the crate writing, great story, and other than the mispronunciation, a great narrator. but to have such a common name mispronounced dozens of times in the book really drove me nuts.
I've heard mistakes like this in other books too. like in one book the constant mispronunciation of the name Chaim.
Mistakes like this would be so easy to correct and are so distracting to the listener and put such a tarnish on the book. It seems crazy to me that there's not more of an effort to catch them. It makes me wonder if anybody ever reviews the narration before it's published.

love the history but ...
Revisado: 12-09-21
The book and the narrator are great and I loved the whole series. However the sex scenes are way too graphic for my taste and it makes me uncomfortable and even ashamed of listening to the books. it shouldn't be like that. other than the sex scenes, the books are so good. Maybe audible could release the equivalent of a cleaned up "radio" version of the books?
