Historia
Meet the Cooke family: Mother and Dad, brother Lowell, sister Fern, and Rosemary, who begins her story in the middle. She has her reasons. “I was raised with a chimpanzee”, she explains. “I tell you Fern was a chimp and already you aren’t thinking of her as my sister. But until Fern’s expulsion...she was my twin, my funhouse mirror, my whirlwind other half and I loved her as a sister”. As a child, Rosemary never stopped talking. Then, something happened, and Rosemary wrapped herself in silence.

Didn't like it
Revisado: 11-05-16
Ok, so this book is receiving high critical acclaim but I didn't like it too much. There's a twist in the middle that I didn't see coming, but that's it. I don't see the point of this book really, and I believe every book should have one. The writing was clunky, I could see the gear and that's never good... yet, I finished it. I don't know, I give it 5 out of 10. Make it 4

An importent book
Revisado: 12-28-14
I must confess, if I'd known this book has the Holocaust theme in it, I wouldn't have bought it. I didn't know what this book was about, it's the first time I read this author, and I'm so glad I've read it. You see, I'm jewish. I live in Israel. I have already heard it all. not from books, not from the history channel, I grew up with it, stories from my own relatives who survived. I know it, it's in my DAN. But as I kept listening, I had the feeling of- this is too much, as a fictional book the auther must know that there is a limit to what the reader can take- reading about the never ending suffering in the camps, and then it hit me, though I have heard it first hand from my grandfather, there was no limit to their suffering in reality. and yes, the book is very well written, but more importently, if you didn't hear it from your grandparents, this book will give you a real glance to what it was like. It's a must.

A solid writing
Revisado: 12-12-14
I did not enjoy the content of this book but I have enjoyed immensely the writing. This writer is very talented. The writing is so, for the lack of better word, solid. from beginning to end it has the same rhythm, like reading with a metronome. the reader understands very well the hero's way of thinking even though he does not relate to it. I will read more books by Amity Gaige, hopefully with content I can relate to.

a good beginning and....that's about it
Revisado: 10-24-14
well, one thing I did learn from this book is not to talk about a book before i'm done reading. at the first few chapters I felt this book will be one of my favorites but alas, no. I could really feel the author's struggle with the meaning of life but it got boring... also, the way of writing is repetative, her craft has just a few ways of writing, it seems she went for a BIG book but couldn't pull it off, it was a lot of flaf and not much substance, I think that if after she wrote it she would leave it and come back to the manuscript after a year a so she (the author) could see where the book is lacking and fix it. bottom line, if you can borrow it from someone, do, and read the beginning, it really is wonderful. once Henry gets married, you can stop reading

"This story is the record of a struggle between two temperaments, two consciences and almost two epochs. It ended, as was inevitable, in disruption. Of the two human beings here described, one was born to fly backward, the other could not help being carried forward. The affection of these two persons was assailed by forces in comparison with which the changes that health or fortune or place introduce are as nothing.

Historia
When Barry Fairweather dies unexpectedly in his early 40s, the little town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils.... Pagford is not what it at first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the town's council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen.

standing ovation to j.k
Revisado: 10-03-12
I enjoyed this book so much, I didnt want it to end. The way J.K knows to describe all the thoughts that go through all of us and at the same time does not stop us from judging others..she is an amazing writer. A lot of small sentences are so condense with so much of the human truth. i loved the book, i really did. bravo!

didnt find it helpful
Revisado: 09-26-12
ok, suger is bad, we get it. i have found the explanations interesting and worth thinking about but the writer who says again and again that it is not a behavioral problem says nothing in the "what to do about it part" he just says: you should it meat and fat and that will make you feel better. you should just do it. well sir, i cant just do it, my body craves the sugar. and THAT'S the problem.

Researcher and thought leader Dr. Brené Brown offers a powerful new vision that encourages us to dare greatly: to embrace vulnerability and imperfection, to live wholeheartedly, and to courageously engage in our lives. In Daring Greatly, Dr. Brown challenges everything we think we know about vulnerability. Based on 12 years of research, her book argues that vulnerability is not weakness but rather our clearest path to courage, engagement, and meaningful connection.

did not like this book
Revisado: 09-26-12
first, the narrator just has an unpleasent voice, in my view. second, this book should be named: stating the obvious in a boring way. i'm sorry, i have tried to like it, but no. not a good book in my opinion.

Historia
One Sunday afternoon, as she unloaded the dishwasher, Gretchen Rubin felt hit by a wave of homesickness. Homesick - why? She was standing right in her own kitchen. She felt homesick, she realized, with love for home itself. “Of all the elements of a happy life,” she thought, “my home is the most important.” In a flash, she decided to undertake a new happiness project, and this time, to focus on home. And what did she want from her home? A place that calmed her and energized her. A place that, by making her feel safe, would free her to take risks.

i LOVED her first book and this book is very pleasent to listen as well. my only regret is that this time (unlike with the happiness project) mrs rubin is not the narrator. i think her voice adds a lot to the book overall.
