A Treat for Historical Fiction Lovers
Revisado: 08-18-22
Kate Quinn is an excellent researcher and story teller, and The Rose Code was enjoyable on so many levels. Her characters are believable, the historical elements fascinating, and the scenes so vividly written that I could see them in my mind. Simultaneously, I didn’t want the book to end and I couldn’t wait to know what came next. Also, the narrator helped the characters come alive with her versatility and made the book a joy to listen to.

Historia
Blindsided by her mother’s sudden death and wrecked by a recent love affair, Casey Peabody has arrived in Massachusetts in the summer of 1997 without a plan. Her mail consists of wedding invitations and final notices from debt collectors. A former child golf prodigy, she now waits tables in Harvard Square and rents a tiny, moldy room at the side of a garage where she works on the novel she has been writing for six years. At 31, Casey is still clutching onto something nearly all her old friends have let go of: the determination to live a creative life.

Didn’t Want it to End
Revisado: 12-28-21
This novel is rich with authenticity — of characters, experiences, conversations, scenes. The writing is beautiful but subtly so. This writer is humble, astute, brilliant and deft. The story moves forward but is sprinkled with wise observations especially about the differences between men and women. Lily King is a masterful writer and Stacey Glemboski’s versatility with the different characters’ voices and accents was spot on.

Historia
In September 1969, a fumbling, cranky old church deacon known as Sportcoat shuffles into the courtyard of the Cause Houses housing project in south Brooklyn, pulls a .38 from his pocket, and, in front of everybody, shoots the project's drug dealer at point-blank range. The reasons for this desperate burst of violence and the consequences that spring from it lie at the heart of Deacon King Kong, James McBride's funny, moving novel and his first since his National Book Award-winning The Good Lord Bird.

Historia
Britt-Marie can't stand mess. She eats dinner at precisely the right time and starts her day at six in the morning because only lunatics wake up later than that. And she is not passive-aggressive. Not in the least. It's just that sometimes people interpret her helpful suggestions as criticisms, which is certainly not her intention. But at 63, Britt-Marie has had enough. She finally walks out on her loveless 40-year marriage and finds a job in the only place she can: Borg, a small, derelict town devastated by the financial crisis.
