Historia
In 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, and is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel’s doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery.

This is my favorite book since ‘one hundred years of solitude’. It’s uniqueness in setting and story is such that i revisit it over and over. It is a gentle story of love and the adaptive ability of humankind

A disappointing story from a favorite author
Revisado: 05-17-15
Yes I love Kate Atkinson but nothing really happens here. I guess that's the point. We love teddy and wish the best for him but life disappoints as does this book. Left me feeling low. Pick another Kate Atkinson The best part is the title.

Historia
Year Zero is a landmark reckoning with the greatdrama that ensued after war came to an end in 1945. One world had ended and anew, uncertain one was beginning. Regime change had come across Asia and all of continental Europe. It was the greatest global powervacuum in history, and out of the often vicious power struggles thatensued emerged the modern world as we know it.

pretty grim.
Revisado: 10-13-13
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
I suppose it's a good history, I don't doubt it's validity but it is very grim. It certainly makes you realize how lucky we were in the U.S. not to have the fighting on our shores. I would have liked more of the history of what governments did in this year about getting back on their feet.
Has Year Zero turned you off from other books in this genre?
yes, I think I am done with WWII.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
the narration was very good and it did open my eyes to things I never knew happened.

Perhaps best known for his No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series, #1 New York Times best-selling author Alexander McCall Smith delights fans around the world with his warmhearted 44 Scotland Street novels. In the series’ sixth entry, the residents of 44 Scotland Street grapple with problems both trivial and severe, but none so great as when six-year-old Bertie Pollock - who longs to be seven - mislays his mum and learns a valuable lesson about wish fulfillment.

Another charming tale
Revisado: 12-24-12
Would you listen to The Importance of Being Seven again? Why?
Here is another charming tale about Berdie, one of my favorite characters in McCall-Smith's books. These are light, engrossing tales with enter weaving plot lines and engaging character flaws and traits that we all share to one extent or another. I love these books and look forward to Berdie growing older.
What other book might you compare The Importance of Being Seven to and why?
Another of my recent listens - Beautiful Ruins - which also has interlocking plot lines. Beautiful Ruins was a very good read!
What does Robert Ian Mackenzie bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
He brings the texture of the language, the accents and the engrossing forcefullness of his character.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
??

Historia
In 1665, a young man from Martha's Vineyard became the first Native American to graduate from Harvard College. Upon this slender factual scaffold, Brooks has created a luminous tale of love and faith, magic and adventure. The narrator of Caleb's Crossing is Bethia Mayfield, growing up in the tiny settlement of Great Harbor amid a small band of pioneers and Puritans. Restless and curious, she yearns after an education that is closed to her by her sex....

An authentic voice
Revisado: 05-22-11
This novel offers us an authentic voice about a little know bit of Americana. The mid to late 1600's and 1700 is a new and interesting bit of time in our history; the early years of Harvard, and Cambridge, Mass., the effect of religious zealots on the early Americas, the early efforts by at least a few of the English immigrants to live with the native Americans is something we have heard too little about.
Brook's voice and use of language is a rich addition to this really beautiful novel with the germ of a real event as the catalyst.
