What an incredible story! I hated finishing this book although the story is now part of me. I had read the description so many times but, although I had noticed the rave reviews, I just couldn't imagine it being something I wouldn't be able to put down. I love the reader, Marin Ireland, and will search for more of her offerings. Thank you to Kevin Wilson. Would love to meet him!

Couldn't stop listening
Revisado: 10-10-22
Kristin Hannah never disappoints. I read and loved FIRE FLY LANE and this book continued on with characters I had already known and loved. Kristin develops her characters skillfully revealing tidbits over time so that you can judge someone's behavior harshly but then a new piece of the puzzle is revealed. Two characters remain a constant throughout and they are the glue that holds the others together. I won't reveal who these two characters are for me but I come away from the story longing for their courage, steadfastness and wise ways. I will not forget the people presented here. They have become a part of me.

Historia
This deliciously sharp novel captures the relentless ambitions and fears that animate parents and their children in modern America, exploring the conflicts between achievement and potential, talent and privilege. Set in the fictional town of Crystal, Colorado, The Gifted School is a keenly entertaining novel that observes the drama within a community of friends and parents as good intentions and high ambitions collide in a pile-up with long-held secrets and lies.

Astute Understanding of Upwardly-Mobile Parents
Revisado: 04-21-22
I found this novel really, really compelling. So much so that I read it in 2 days. Great characterization, a gripping theme, a fast-paced narrative, well-managed plot, and lots of delicious humor -- and some nice bitchiness. A very good expose of middle class parents' anxious competitiveness and children's anxiety about their identities -- and, to some extent, about their parents. The novel completely rips apart the idea of "giftedness" and of schools for gifted children -- it's really good on the politics of these, and how they prey on parental anxieties. The novel gets the kids' idiom really well, but so also that of the parents. The relations between the wives and husbands were very well observed. I was pretty convinced by all the women, as well as by all the men.

A Masterpiece in Literature 10 stars
Revisado: 02-17-22
Best book I've read and listened to in a long time. I understand completely the feeling that the situation seems too hard to vicariously dive into but I found the protagonist to be very complex as she experiences the horrors of her time. There is love and beauty (especially in her poetry) amid the profane. I listened to the story as an audio first and found it so much easier to follow. The narrator delivers like a Broadway one woman actress. I needed the book to have a written copy of the amazing poetry interspersed throughout. I'm surprised I hadn't hear anything about what I consider to be a masterpiece in literary accomplishment. While I had read "White Orleander" I found this book and it's sequel to be far superior.

Three are killed. The lives of the families are shattered and the rifts between them ripple throughout the small town. I really wanted to like this book but I actually couldn't wait for it to end. I really didn't find one character that I really became enamored with over the course of the story. I got to the point where I didn't care what happened to anyone.

Extremely Moving
Revisado: 10-12-21
I really enjoyed this book and loved the main character! While feeling her extreme pain and heart ache as she journeyed through an unfathomable chain of horror, I also knew I was witnessing nobility and felt honored, knowing that the destitute often display a courage and strength and a heroism we would be so wise to emulate.
