At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

Delightful

This story is gripping. It draws you in. I can relate to many aspects of the story. I think of my own children surviving their parent’s divorce and my remarriage. I wonder if they had similar thoughts and feelings. Tom Hanks brings the story to life and it seems as though Danny is truly telling the story. I hated for it to end.

But his outlook on life changes one night when a teacher, his pregnant wife, and their young son appear. Killed in a violent robbery, they tell the surgeon that they have been offered a second chance at living if the surgeon can mend their wounds before sunrise.

I am not typically drawn to this genre of book. However, I heard it recommended on a podcast. I was hooked from the beginning. The story is so thrilling I could not stop listening. The different voices for the characters added depth and dimension to the recording. This is one I will listen to again.
