Historia
Fourteen-year-old Moshe Kessler steps off the train at Buchenwald concentration camp. Having endured the horrors of Auschwitz-Birkenau, lost touch with his entire family, and survived the death march in the freezing winter, Moshe has seen more than his share of tragedy. At Buchenwald, the new arrivals are assigned to their barracks. Kinder Block 66 is to be Moshe’s new home, but he doesn’t yet realize just how significant this will turn out to be. For just a short time later, the Germans decide to destroy the camp—but they are not prepared for Buchenwald’s secret resistance.

What a travesty of such reading for a story that deserves so much more in the telling
Revisado: 12-15-24
Why is it that for such a well-written, moving, historical novel could you not find a narrator who would at least pronounce the names, places, and other Jewish practices correctly? Who there decided that this reader was appropriate for this book?
I think this narrator’s reading might work well for other vehicles— but not this one. He is meant for other genres, I think. His narration lacks too much depth or feeling for the subject matter.
This story is not simply a list of facts to be read. It is far more. This narrator missed the mark for this book completely.
How I would love to hear it again with a different voice.

Did Columbus believe that God called him west to undiscovered lands? Does American democracy owe its inception to the handful of Pilgrims that settled at Plymouth? If, indeed, there was a specific, divine call upon this nation, is it still valid today?

Finally, the truth is told
Revisado: 10-14-23
This book was a gift I gave my son nearly 40 years ago. Through the decades I told myself I’d read it. This year, for the first time, I did. I just finished my second reading of it. It could easily have been written now given how closely it matches American issues of today.
I discovered a history of Columbus’ goals and faith—things I never learned in school. A rich story of God’s interactions with believers from long ago, failures and victories in their walks with Him and how it impacted our own nation building and even now our lives.
It continues through the fight for and the building of our nation and the freedoms we’ve long enjoyed. All because a people wanted His wisdom and guidance in creating a homeland molded and inspired by His Holy Spirit through Chris our Lord.
It is not a preachy book; it is a love story of God’s blessings for a people who sought to live for Him and honor Him and He blessed us with this nation.
It also demonstrates what happens when we turn away from Him and His wisdom. How our pride can get in the way of caring for others and doing what we know is wise and true.
There is so much I have learned from this story that was not taught to me in school but hidden given its unpopularity to mention God in any way plausible.
I’ve now read it twice and may do so again. There is so much to retain that I don’t want to forget anything I have learned.
Mine is a feeble review from what I might say about the very great impact of this true story carefully based on research and sources easily referenced.
I encourage all to read it and share the truth with your children and others. To do so is a regret you will never face.
God bless our America. Hear our prayers, Lord. Heal our land.
