I'd heard about the book but I was really glad I waited for the unabridged audiobook before experiencing it. Wonderful example of what happens when a terrific book becomes an audio masterpiece.

Scott Sowers has done a ton of audiobooks, some I've bought before. He injects a lot of personality into the work, and it can enhance the listening experience but in this case it's too much. I listened to 45 minutes of this book and after 10 minutes found I was paying more attention to the performance than the content.I know HST deserves an edgy delivery but this reading went from "edge" to strident to irritating. Listen to the sample, imagine hours of it and make up your own mind.

Scott Turow unspools this story slowly using different points-of-view of different characters. Edward Hermann dies a terrific job, representing all the male characters. Because the female "voice" doesn't show up until later in the novel, it was disconcerting when Orlagh Cassidy popped up but she does a great delivery, too. I enjoyed this for both legs of a long trip - it made me look forward to getting back on the road!

I'm listening to this during an election season and it's so very heartening to hear how outlandishly our country behaved in this era. A remarkable book in its scope and dimension of portrayal of every facet of American life. All the usual stuff: presidents, wars, scandals - they're all here in great depiction, but learn also about culture, entertainment, religion, sex, class structure, and the deepening throb of the national inflamation around slavery.
One caveat to listeners, and it didn't inhibit my enjoyment but it's VERY obvious where the book was mixed in post-edit where for brief sections it almost sounds like a different reader. You'll notice it, too, but if you enjoy U.S. history this is a wonderful experience.

I read this book when I was a teenager and loved it. It's still great, and even better on audio. Terrific performance, too, with Marc Vietor giving voice to the long cast of characters. If you like post-apocalytic fiction I'd recommend Lucifer's Hammer, it's a classic for good reason.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This is such a terrific book. The story of a fostered pre-teen girl in WWII Germany told from a completely unique point-of-view will never be forgotten. It's beauty is especially powerful when rendered in audio and the read by Alan Corduner strikes the perfect chord, wistful and lovely.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Jacqueline Marcell has something for all of us who have elder caregiving roles. Her father's emotionally abusive behavior, which sounds incredibly bi-polar, really draws you in. She recounts the terrible time she had getting anyone to believe he could be so abusive and then extraordinary normal and charming (I think I yelled "flipcam! flipcam him!" at least a couple of times).
I know I would've enjoyed it more if Jacqueline had revealed her own self-discovery about a lifetime of enabling behavior, but it's hardly touched on. She gives a very theatrical read so take a listen to the sample first and see if you like it. The boomer pop culture references cascade non-stop and, as she says in the beginning, every incident gets it's own classic rock theme or motown theme song.

If you could sum up Alas, Babylon in three words, what would they be?

IN the vein of Failsafe and On the Beach, Alas Babylon is compelling glympse into an era fading from memory that needs to be remembered. Will Patton does a fantastic read of a rich story.
