Historia
When Jane Mooney’s violent stepfather, Warren, disappeared, most folks in Maud Bottoms, Arkansas, assumed he got drunk and drowned. After all, the river had claimed its share over the years. When Jane confessed to his murder, she should have gone to jail. That’s what she wanted. But without a body, the police didn’t charge her with the crime. So Jane left for Boston—and took her secrets with her. Twenty-five years later, the river floods and a body surfaces.

Southern small town crime novel
Revisado: 12-24-22
There were too many plot twists in this small town southern crime thriller. Interesting added features like a lesbian live story

Historia
The four long narratives in The Emigrants appear at first to be the straightforward biographies of four Germans in exile. Sebald reconstructs the lives of a painter, a doctor, an elementary-school teacher, and Great Uncle Ambrose. Following (literally) in their footsteps, the narrator retraces routes of exile which lead from Lithuania to London, from Munich to Manchester, from the South German provinces to Switzerland, France, New York, Constantinople, and Jerusalem.

Disappointed
Revisado: 12-11-22
I have both read and listened to a reading of this book in hopes of understanding the praise it has garnered. I’m stumped. Further, the audible recording was particularly irritating since given the substantial amount of French and German text, one would have thought a narrator could be found who actually spoke at least one if not bottom these very mainstream languages. That was not to be, however, as both were brutally mangled throughout the recording.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Wonderful, surprising. Very technical
Revisado: 12-04-22
Project Hail Mary is one of those rarest things in science fiction that provides a happy, positive, hopeful view of the future, though against the backdrop of a typically dramatic catastrophe. The book is very technical from a scientific standpoint, which may appeal to some readers while turning others off. I thoroughly enjoyed project Hail Mary.

Historia
From two former military officers and award-winning authors comes a chillingly authentic geopolitical thriller that imagines a naval clash between the US and China in the South China Sea in 2034 - and the path from there to a nightmarish global conflagration.

Outstanding, hopeful “counter-programming” to our times
Revisado: 06-11-22
2034 probably came to me at the perfect moment which might explain why I loved it so much. It is a wonderful story with great characters and in the multiple-reader format on Audible, a pleasure to listen to. But as with much science fiction (which I love) it has great relevance for our times without being preachy or coming across like just another talking head. Highly enjoyable and recommended.

Historia
Cast out of the royal court by Eleanor of Aquitaine, deemed too coarse and rough-hewn for marriage or courtly life, seventeen-year-old Marie de France is sent to England to be the new prioress of an impoverished abbey, its nuns on the brink of starvation and beset by disease. At first taken aback by the severity of her new life, Marie finds focus and love in collective life with her singular and mercurial sisters. In this crucible, Marie steadily supplants her desire for family, for her homeland, for the passions of her youth with something new to her.

So disappointed
Revisado: 12-02-21
I had read many rave reviews of Matrix and was looking forward to some historical fiction from the Middle Ages. I kept waiting for the moment that justified the praise. Sadly, it never came

Historia
Almost everything about Wallace is at odds with the Midwestern university town where he is working uneasily toward a biochem degree. An introverted young man from Alabama, black and queer, he has left behind his family without escaping the long shadows of his childhood. For reasons of self-preservation, Wallace has enforced a wary distance even within his own circle of friends—some dating each other, some dating women, some feigning straightness.

SO DISAPPOINTING
Revisado: 11-22-21
This was one of most disappointing books I’ve ever heard. Not only does NOTHING happen but it is filled with trite, cliched gay dialogue. As a gay man, I was hoping for more. I found it almost entirely without interest. As for the narrator, he clearly had a cold and I found myself constantly wanting to offer him a tissue. Sadly, a real misfire.

Historia
Who am I? Who were these people who made me who I am? And, what was this place? Was it ever what I thought it was? For celebrated journalist and author Julie Salamon, these recently became central questions. Salamon spent the first 18 years of her life Seaman, Ohio, a town that is part of the American heartland, a repository of mythology and misunderstanding.

Exactly the kind of story we need to hear more of!
Revisado: 07-17-21
I bet we ALL have untold stories of unlikely friendships, just like Julie's. These stories aren't told often enough and certainly, not with the color and artistry of an award-winning writer like Julie Salamon. Though I have read all of her books, HEARING her read her own book was a unique and special treat. If anyone is looking for a not-too-long, rich, truly American story, listen to this book!
