I'm a fan of this, and I didn't even want to be!!
Revisado: 03-14-25
I am a mystery / thriller girlie through and through, and someone recommended this series to me recently. I was a little reluctant because romantasy hasn't really been appealing to me (not yucking anyone's yum here). But this book is fantastic: it was very well written, well narrated, and the story is great enough to push me to listen to the rest of the series. A Hidden gem of a book if I ever listened or read one!

I stumbled on the Dan Riley series last year and have been hooked to each story. This one was probably one of the best, and that ending.... those last 30 minutes will break your heart, and shatter it over and over again. The final words are an absolute stroke of genius and as a mother of a special needs child, they made me tear up something awful. Don't sleep on this series, you won't regret it.

When the call came it seemed like the answer to my prayers. My career as a voice actor had been over for months and me and my little girl Scarlet were living back at my mum’s place. I felt like a failure professionally—and with Scarlet having problems at school, as a parent as well. So, when I was asked to narrate a new book by disappeared novelist Philippa Roberts I jumped at the chance, even if it meant leaving Scarlet with my ex, Hugo, for a few weeks. Hugo, with his perfect new home and his perfect new girlfriend Saskia. But this isn’t a dream come true. It’s a nightmare.

Great story!
Revisado: 03-01-25
This book was very entertaining. I enjoyed the dual timelines and the narration was excellent as I would expect from Corbett and Atherton. The motivations behind the plot became clear around the halfway point; but I ended up with only one of my suspects being the correct one - that was an enjoyable twist. An all-around great listen!

Historia
For Detective Sam Porter, the words "Father, forgive me" conjure memories long forgotten; a past intentionally buried. For Anson Bishop, these three words connect a childhood to the present as he unleashes a truth concealed for decades. Found written on cardboard near each body, these words link multiple victims to a single killer - discovered within minutes of each other in both Chicago and South Carolina - clearly connected yet separated by impossible miles.

This book will traumatize you - in a good way
Revisado: 02-14-25
This is the kind of book (well, the whole series, really) that will burrow into your head and live there for a while. You will question everything, you will trust no one, you will be shocked, you will be horrified... you will have all the feelings in the gamut of human emotions. Do not skip this series - I stumbled on it by chance and regret not having listened to it before now.
The narration was excellent, and while sometimes the different timetables may be confusing, you can still pick the thread back up easily as the stories continue to intertwine. This book is a masterclass on storytelling, and the author's note at the end is perfect for book club open discussions.

Good story but...
Revisado: 01-31-25
First of all, the voice acting was great, although there were quite a few editing inconsistencies where Armitage's lines were re-recorded and it sounded like he used his phone to dial in the editing rather than using a recording studio. Armitage can do not wrong in my book, so I let it slide the 7 or 8 times it happened throughout the book. Middleton was great as well, so overall the narration gets a 4.5 out of 5.
Secondly, the story was OK but it had some predictable plot points: I felt as if I knew where the story was headed with the cast of characters we were introduced to, and the trend it was following. I found that plot point to be tired and almost boring, but I stayed until the end because I'm not a fan of not finishing a book.
Third, I didn't care for the preachy aspect of it, and I felt like the catalyst to the events of the story was forced, as if the whole point of the book was to bash men and say how horrible they all are. The actions of the MMC almost seemed like a throwaway plot point rather than the catalyst of the main story.
Overall, it was a good story: there were some surprises I didn't see coming, so it wasn't an entirely negative experience. A solid 4 out of 5.

A bit predictable but still entertaining
Revisado: 01-17-25
I'm not looking for a masterpiece, but this book, though predictable, was a great listen. I do wish the author had separated the monologues between the main female character and the female antagonist a bit more. I found myself relistening to some parts because I was uncertain of who was speaking. Overall it was entertaining and kept me engaged.

At first, I thought it was walking into a plot where someone was going to stop at nothing to defend a loved one. But it went much deeper than that. I thoroughly enjoyed this, and the narration was superb.

Liked it and the narration was well done! Though the culprit was pretty predictable, it was still entertaining to hear how they came about into their story arc.
