Poor narration
Revisado: 12-21-24
The narrator was an obstacle for me. He pronounced French words poorly, like pere as "per" and dauphin quite strangely. Not sure how many words I didn't recognize because of this.
I did like the story once I got into it, but if you know any French or dislike bad narration, look elsewhere.

Historia
A book of everyday ethics by a man whom Pope St. John Paul II called “one of the great ethicists of the 20th century”, The Art of Living is Dietrich von Hildebrand’s essential guide to the moral life. In just over four hours, Dietrich von Hildebrand, with his wife Alice, presents a distinctive view of the virtuous life that begins with reverence, “the mother of all virtues”, and includes chapters on “Faithfulness”, “Goodness”, “Hope”, “The Human Heart”, and many others.

An index of virtue
Revisado: 02-02-22
This book is a though-provoking review of several virtues from a Catholic intellectual perspective. A few quotes really stood out including this one from the chapter on faithfulness: "As surprising as it may sound, inconstant people never change themselves."
My favorite chapters were the ones by Alice von Hildebrand. From her essay on communion: "There is only one solution to the scourge of our time - solitude - and this solution is Christ."
The narrator was not my favorite, but the reading was clear and easy to listen to.

Historia
In this definitive biography, renowned Bible scholar, Anglican bishop, and best-selling author N. T. Wright offers a radical look at the apostle Paul, illuminating the humanity and remarkable achievements of this intellectual who invented Christian theology - transforming a faith and changing the world. For centuries, Paul, the apostle who "saw the light on the Road to Damascus" and made a miraculous conversion from zealous Pharisee persecutor to devoted follower of Christ, has been one of the church's most widely cited saints.

This book was an answer to my prayers
Revisado: 08-06-18
Just when I was looking for a biography of St. Paul this book came out. It is amazing. If you are a Christian interested in the development of the faith, read this book. St. Paul will become human thanks to Wright's years of study and prayer. He keeps coming back to the foundations of Paul's zealous faith in "the Son of God, who loves me and gave Himself for me" (Gal 2:20). Well read, too!

Historia
This searing story of slavery and freedom in the Chesapeake reveals the pivot in the nation’s path between the founding and civil war. Frederick Douglass recalled that slaves living along Chesapeake Bay longingly viewed sailing ships as "freedom’s swift-winged angels." In 1813 those angels appeared in the bay as British warships coming to punish the Americans for declaring war on the empire. Drawn from new sources, Alan Taylor's riveting narrative re-creates the events that inspired black Virginians, haunted slaveholders, and set the nation on a new and dangerous course.

Unlistenable at regular speed
Revisado: 04-26-17
The narrator's plodding pace was unbearable at regular speed. I got through at 1.25. The history is interesting but only ok. This is basically a history of an extended Virginia family (they left substantial correspondence) that was turned into a slightly broader book.

Historia
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s account of the first successful large-scale application of nonviolent resistance in America is comprehensive, revelatory, and intimate. King described his book as "the chronicle of 50,000 Negroes who took to heart the principles of nonviolence, who learned to fight for their rights with the weapon of love, and who, in the process, acquired a new estimate of their own human worth."

Historia
“The problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color line,” writes Du Bois, in one of the most prophetic works in all of American literature. First published in 1903, this collection of 15 essays dared to describe the racism that prevailed at that time in America—and to demand an end to it. Du Bois’ writing draws on his early experiences, from teaching in the hills of Tennessee, to the death of his infant son, to his historic break with the conciliatory position of Booker T. Washington.
