Historia
Beneath the gaze of the gods, the mighty armies of Greece and Troy met in fierce and glorious combat, scrupulously following the text set forth in Homer's timeless narrative. But that was before 21st-century scholar Thomas Hockenberry stirred the bloody brew, causing an enraged Achilles to join forces with his archenemy, Hector, and turn his murderous wrath on Zeus and the entire pantheon of divine manipulators; before the swift and terrible mechanical creatures that catered for centuries to the pitiful idle remnants of Earth's human race began massing in the millions, to exterminate rather than serve.

Good first half, terrible ending
Revisado: 05-15-24
For about 70% of the book. it's leading up to what should be a fantastic, epic conclusion. But then, nothing. Multiple storylines are just dropped off. And the storylines that are wrapped up are wrapped up in a very unsatisfying way.

In vivid, brilliant fiction that illuminates the dark psychology of soldiers, Jeff Shaara brings to life the familiar characters, stunning triumphs, and soul-crushing defeats of the fascinating, long-forgotten Mexican-American War.

great narration, lackluster writing
Revisado: 06-22-21
I quite like many of Jeff Shaara's works. However, this is not one of his best. When his writing lacks, the cardinal sign is that the characters embody pre-devised tropes he often falls on in his lesser works. The dutifully modest soldier, the hotheaded general, the commander that causes trouble, the military genius, etc.
When different characters feel the same between novels, it's a sign that the writer is not putting forth their best efforts. As this was Shaara's third outing, perhaps this is the genesis of those tropes he so often falls back to.

Historia
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

Good, But Lacking
Revisado: 12-29-17
Rosario Dawson's performace gets a little mundane. The voices and inflections are good. but how she delivers lines for Jazz is terrible.
The story is decent too. but it feels empty, considering there isn't much of a story until almost halfway through and everything is constantly changing.

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

excellence upon excellence
Revisado: 12-26-17
This is over all one of the best books I have ever read. The narration and delivery of certain lines really makes the story in some places and helps to drive the book toward and excellent climax.

Historia
Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King's Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert's name. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse - unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season. Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances....

Great Story, Terribke Narrator
Revisado: 09-21-17
The story is compelling, and I ended up finishing the book in about a week. But Roy Dotrice is a bad narrator. His voices tend to blend and give bad characterizations for what should otherwise be compelling characters.
I have seen the entire TV series, which gives me a bias against his voices to begin with. But the man was on the show. He should have a pretty good idea what all the characters should come across as.

Historia
Al Franken, Giant of the Senate is a book about an unlikely campaign that had an even more improbable ending: the closest outcome in history and an unprecedented eight-month recount saga, which is pretty funny in retrospect. It's a book about what happens when the nation's foremost progressive satirist gets a chance to serve in the United States Senate and, defying the low expectations of the pundit class, actually turns out to be good at it.

Sincere Food For Thought
Revisado: 09-17-17
I would describe myself as a strong constitutional libertarian. But I love this book.
I agree and disagree with Senator Franken on several issues, but something I cannot disagree with him on is his philosophy on what it means to serve his state.
throughout his book, he makes it abundantly clear how passionate he is, and how driven he is to do his job well. its a passion that makes it very easy to like him, and enjoy his book regardless of where your politics may align itself.
