Historia
Hockey coach Ashley Jaswal doesn't take nonsense from anyone … except her overbearing and superstitious family. They believe she's a good luck charm for her brother Jas, the newest Vancouver Canucks draft pick, forcing Ash to attend all his games as he rises up the NHL ranks, sacrificing her personal life (not that she has one—who decided hockey season needed to be 10 months long anyway?). Ash also clashes with Jas’s teammate, Canucks captain Devin Snyder.

Awful narration
Revisado: 01-22-25
Yikes this is a tough review to write... this is a 2-2.5 for me... the story itself would be a 3.5 but the terrible narration brings it down significantly because there were moments where it was actually hard to listen to. For some reason when the narrator spoke as the male characters, it sounded like she was doing it through gritted teeth while behind a door. It was so unpleasant.

Historia
Marina is hot, blonde, and wickedly smart, but when it comes to men? She's hopeless. Between her quirks and her lack of filter, there isn't a man in Los Angeles that will stick around after the third date. Her handsome, charming friend Lazarus has the opposite problem. Everyone wants to be the sexy Brit's girlfriend, but he gets bored and moves on quickly. There's only one way to figure out why neither of them has cracked this love thing - they'll date each other. On paper, it's the perfect experiment. But in reality, things between Marina and Laz get complicated quickly.

Great pacing
Revisado: 03-05-24
**spoiler alert** I listened to this as an audible audiobook and the female narrator is a favorite of mine but the male narrator was hard to get into. His accent didn’t feel authentic and his “voices” when voicing other characters were cringey. His stoner friend in particular was painful to listen to.
All that said, I really enjoyed the actual story and book. It was your typical friends to lovers with a 3rd act breakup and personal twists and turns that pulled the couple back together but it was nicely done and had a nice story arch. It didn’t feel rushed which I find happens a lot in books of this genre so that was especially satisfying.

First 5 star book of 2024
Revisado: 03-05-24
My first 5star review of 2024. This book was beautiful. It had elements of fiction with realism, a bit of fantasy mixed in, some thriller notes and even one romance. Overall, the character development was phenomenal, the story arc was engaging and well thought out and the concept was something truly new (at least to me). Loved this book!

A WWII Hist-fic Hit!
Revisado: 03-05-24
I’m a big literary fiction fan, specifically WWII histfic as it makes me feel connected to my grandparents generation and the things they lived through. I’m also a sucker for a good “independent woman” narrative. This was both. Albeit a forced independent woman due to tragic wartime circumstance, this story of sacrifice and long awaited forgiveness and the absolute love of devoted friends and siblings was everything you’d want from WWII historical fiction. There was loss and love and there were deep hidden life altering secrets. Beautifully written and narrated by the author herself, I would consider this one of my favorite WWII novels.

Shocking twists
Revisado: 03-05-24
I thought the narration of this book was really well done on Audible. Sometimes I did have a little trouble differentiating the voices of the 2 female leads though.
I really enjoyed this book, as someone who usually sees twists and turns coming a mile away, the last 2ish hours of this audiobook had me gasping I did not see some of these twists coming AT ALL and that to me is a sure sign of a job well done by the author.

A well performed, interesting story
Revisado: 03-05-24
So I’m not usually a suspense/mystery reader but the book description intrigued me and I’m glad I decided to pick it up. I listened on audible and thought the narration was well done.
I do think the plot could have moved along faster and it got a little jumbled and confusing for a bit in the middle to where I wasn’t sure what was happening entirely but it smoothed out and was really well done ultimately.
Moments of absolute heartbreak were throughout the book and my momma heart aches so much at so many moments.
I also feel like the author did a good job with touching on some really tough topics mostly with grace.

A decent 2nd book in the series!
Revisado: 03-05-24
Reviews are so funny sometimes, the subjectivity is wild! I've read some negativity around this story being predictable and poo-pooing Liam's personality, but for me - this was a solid book. I enjoyed the story, I liked the balance between small-town romance, friendship, found family and thriller-esque drama. I enjoyed the narrators on audible and I thought it was a good overall story flow.

A little repetitive
Revisado: 03-05-24
**spoiler alert** If I had read this as a standalone I’d have given it 4 stars, but as a 3rd in the series, I’m starting to feel like the formula is getting a bit tired. Another assault. Another kidnapping. Another local who’s a bad human. It just feels a little repetitive. But as a stand alone, I really would have loved it. The characters are endearing and swoon worthy.

Female Empowerment!
Revisado: 03-05-24
I must be all in my female empowerment feels lately bc this was another great anthemic feeling romance where the struggles of being a woman in a male dominated field are highlighted. I loved the grumpy x sunshine vibes and the focus on mental health, the representation of the queer community and the found family vibes. It was such a nice collective of impactful topics while still feeling all the warm and fuzzies if a romance read.
I’d definitely explore more books by Roan Parrish.

Off to a good start
Revisado: 03-05-24
I enjoyed this first book in the Sutter Lake series. I will say that I wasn't too far into the book when I had a (correct) guess about who the killer was, but while usually that would bum me out, the rest of the story kept me interested. Overall, I thought this was a good entry into the series and I look forward to the others.
