Historia
Timothy Snyder has been called “the leading interpreter of our dark times.” As a historian, he has given us startling reinterpretations of political collapse and mass killing. As a public intellectual, he has turned that knowledge toward counsel and prediction, working against authoritarianism here and abroad. His book On Tyranny has inspired millions around the world to fight for freedom. Now, in this tour de force of political philosophy, he helps us see exactly what we’re fighting for.

Historia
The art world can appear impenetrable to the beginner. This classic book, in print since 1990, is an invaluable primer that will help anyone to penetrate the thickets of inscrutable 'insider info' and esoteric jargon. Updated for today's art market, including online buying, The Art of Buying Art is without a doubt the most accessible book on how to research, evaluate, price, and buy artworks—for anyone who wants to buy art. No previous knowledge of art or the art business is necessary.

TOO long, not terribly helpful
Revisado: 08-05-24
If you’re looking for some grand insight into the art buying world, look elsewhere. There’s no groundbreaking advice here. If anything, it comes across as contradictory and condescending. In one chapter, we read that we’re NOT supposed to collect art as a financial investment, but to only buy art that you really like. Later, we’re advised to take financial values and future appreciation into account when choosing pieces, no matter how you like something.
What advice there is in this book could’ve been condensed to some bullet points, making it about half as long. Wasting my time telling me what you’re GOING to tell me, instead of just telling me what I need to know, is one of my biggest pet peeves; this book certainly tried to get as many of those in there as possible. (Should’ve hired a better editor who would be willing to help the author condense!)

Historia
In 1957, Frank Kameny, a rising astronomer working for the US Military in Hawaii, received a summons to report immediately to Washington, DC. The Pentagon had reason to believe he was a homosexual, and after a series of humiliating interviews, Kameny - like gay men and women for generations - was promptly dismissed from the military. Unlike many others, though, Kameny fought back.

Well researched and super important history about the gay liberation movement. Though it focuses mostly on Frank, many other key players in the push toward LGBTQ+ equality are also included. This should be required reading for all LGBTQ+ people.

Historia
There has never been a better time to be a screenwriter. The recent explosion of cable and streaming services has created a huge demand for movies, limited series, and those long running “bingeable” shows that can hook viewers for years. Before streaming cable networks, the internet, and home entertainment systems radically changed how we consume our entertainment, there was a clear dividing line between writing for feature films and writing for television. That distinction no longer exists. Most major writers, filmmakers and movie stars are now eager to work on projects for the ...

Content is fine, but used an AI recording…
Revisado: 04-02-24
The content of this book is fine: concise and useful information. But I can’t believe a screenwriter used AI to record this audiobook, especially after the strikes. That really calls the authors’ professionalism and WGA commitments into question, not to mention the AI reading didn’t even do a great job. Don’t preach about formatting, and use technology that reads “EXT.” as “extension.”

Historia
Wyatt Earp is regarded as the most famous lawman of the Old West, best known for his role in the Gunfight at the OK Corral in Tombstone, Arizona. But the story of his two-year war with a band of outlaws known as the Cowboys has never been told in full. The Cowboys were the largest outlaw gang in the history of the American West. After battles with the law in Texas and New Mexico, they shifted their operations to Arizona. There, they ruled the border, robbing, rustling, smuggling, and killing with impunity until they made the fatal mistake of tangling with the Earp brothers.

Bland
Revisado: 12-12-23
The writing is bland as all get out - even by history book standards. And the conclusion trying to draw comparisons or moral lessons with modern police is not only a stretch but patently ridiculous… claiming police shouldn’t face legal consequences for their actions in uniform? This isn’t the Wild West anymore, and trying to layer the past onto the present really muddies this book further. At least it added something interesting to this otherwise uninteresting book, I guess?

Cyril Avery is not a real Avery - or at least that's what his adoptive parents tell him. And he never will be. But if he isn't a real Avery, then who is he? Born out of wedlock to a teenage girl cast out from her rural Irish community and adopted by a well-to-do if eccentric Dublin couple via the intervention of a hunchbacked Redemptorist nun, Cyril is adrift in the world, anchored only tenuously by his heartfelt friendship with the infinitely more glamourous and dangerous Julian Woodbead.

Touching, Beautiful Modern Classic
Revisado: 05-18-23
Both heart-warming and heart-wrenching, this story of a gay Irishman’s life is fantastic. I laughed, I cried, and I wanted so desperately to sit and talk with Cyril Avery by the end. This book 100% belongs in the modern classic canon.

Hidden Gem You Shouldn’t Pass By
Revisado: 05-09-23
Best friend recommended this to me, and I’m honestly surprised this isn’t a classic that everyone knows. The writing is exciting and so vivid, it was like watching a movie of it playing out in my mind. Adventure, action, mystery, and a little something deeper that defies words - it’s all here. And Mr. Newbern’s performance is spectacular! Seriously, don’t sleep on this one!
