This series is not your typical cozy mystery. The protagonist is male but the author is female. The hero isn't perfect and can at times be quite annoying but the stories are very interesting. I got to learn a little Scottish folklore from this book, too. The narrator is fantastic and production values are very high. I couldn't wait to finish the book and then was a bit sad it was over.

Historia
Molly Gray is not like everyone else. She struggles with social skills and misreads the intentions of others. Her gran used to interpret the world for her, codifying it into simple rules that Molly could live by. Since Gran died a few months ago, twenty-five-year-old Molly has been navigating life’s complexities all by herself. No matter—she throws herself with gusto into her work as a hotel maid. Her unique character, along with her obsessive love of cleaning and proper etiquette, make her an ideal fit for the job.

Entirely unbelievable
Revisado: 02-19-22
I have to say after the first couple hours, this book wasn't boring but it was ridiculous. The performance was great. The characters had distinct voices. I won't belabor the main character's quirks as the topic has been discussed. However, the legal stuff is even more ludicrous. The courtroom scenes make it seem like the author has never seen the inside of a courtroom or even a single episode of Law and Order. A police officer does not appear before a judge without a prosecutor and a private defense attorney does not represent the state in a criminal trial.
I didn't find the story predictable but it is preposterous.

Everything is Perfect
Revisado: 01-25-22
This 8s not just a cozy mystery. It's so much more. A thriller, a romance, an action adventure, a whodunit. The characters are drawn deeply and with love. I enjoyed this book more than the first. I felt like I learned more about the characters and their motivations. The narrator is by far the best I've listened to and that's saying a lot.

This family gives new depth to dysfunction
Revisado: 01-14-22
This book started off fairly slowly but built until it was boiling. I really enjoyed the analysis of the psychological/pathological behaviors at play in this family. It's a mystery but it's also a family drama. It kept me changing my mind as to what I thought had happened. It's certainly not a happy-go-lucky story and I felt a bit drained when it was done but I still really enjoyed this book. The narrator did a fine job.

Why change the narrator??
Revisado: 01-06-22
The narrator for the rest of the books was great. This one not so much. She made Kitty sound like a 50 year old divorcee rather than a woman in her early 20s. Then there was her "American " accent. She made the characters a caricature of Southern? Western? Americans. Embarrassing.
The story was still delightful but this narrator should be replaced for future books.

Historia
A mummified corpse, over half a century old, is found in the cellar of an abandoned building in a remote New Mexico ghost town. Corrie Swanson is assigned what seems to her a throwaway case: to ID the body and determine cause of death. She brings archaeologist Nora Kelly to excavate the body and lend her expertise to the investigation, and together they uncover something unexpected and shocking: the deceased apparently died in agony, in a fetal position, skin coming off in sheets, with a rictus of horror frozen on his face. Hidden on the corpse lies a 16th-century Spanish gold cross.

Good story-terrible narrator almost ruined it
Revisado: 06-22-21
This is a spin-off of the Pendergast series. The main characters are Corrie Swanson, Pendergast's protege who is now an FBI agent and Nora Kelly, the archaeologist. The story was really engaging and I loved hearing about the deserts of the Southwest where I live. However, the narrator was terrible. All of the women sounded very breathy and very angry. All the men sounded like Sean Penn's Spicoli from Fast Times at Ridgemont High. This was especially acute for Nora's brother Skip. The narrator made him sound like an idiot Valley boy, which he certainly wasn't. She made the Sheriff sound like a caricature of a western lawman. The worst was at the very end when Pendergast made a brief appearance. Pendergast is from New Orleans, not London. Get a new narrator pronto, please!

good story, poor narrator
Revisado: 08-29-19
I love these books and was excited to listen to a new b one after a long wait. The story was still good, the author is so descriptive of the Market, she makes me want to get on a plane tomorrow. However the narrator just wasn't good. She mispronounced several words badly. In dialogue, I had a difficulty differentiating between the characters at times. I still enjoyed the story.

Historia
Best-selling author Bryan Burrough recently made a shocking discovery: The small town of Temple, Texas, where he had grown up, had harbored a dark secret. One of his high school classmates, Danny Corwin, was a vicious serial killer. In this chilling tale, Burrough raises important questions of whether serial killers can be recognized before they kill or rehabilitated after they do. It is also a story of Texas politics and power that led the good citizens of the town of Temple to enable a demon who was their worst nightmare.

just not much meat to this story
Revisado: 03-21-19
First, this narrator should be narrating children's books not true stories of serial killers. His sing- song style is offputting especially when talking about rape and murder. Sometimes, he even sounds gleeful. Second, there really isn't much interesting about the story other than the way victims were treated 40 years ago and is no real surprise. Just wasn't enough there there.
