Historia
Every woman wants to be Elizabeth Bennet Darcy - beautiful, gracious, universally admired, strong, daring and outspoken - a thoroughly modern woman in crinolines. And every woman will fall madly in love with Mr. Darcy - tall, dark and handsome, a nobleman and a heartthrob whose virility is matched only by his utter devotion to his wife. Their passion is consuming and idyllic - essentially, they can’t keep their hands off each other - through a sweeping tale of adventure and misadventure, human folly and numerous mysteries of parentage.

Elegant bawdy fun
Revisado: 03-13-25
Jane Austen would swoon in horror at the erotic shenanigans in this entertaining romp about the salaciously libidinous Lizzy and Darcy in the early stages of their marriage. They lustily and imaginatively anoint every bed, closet, table and bathtub within the Pemberly environs. While this is great fun for the listener — I was never aware before of the many colorful euphemisms for one’s “womanly portal” for example — such frequent vagaries into the couple’s vigorous concupiscence actually interrupts the flow of the actual plot. It was a little bit annoying! There are several intriguing plot lines that take far too long to resolve because of all the romantic interludes, and I felt the audiobook might have benefitted by being a few hours shorter. Rosalyn Landor is one of the best narrators I’ve encountered, hilariously conveying wry humor with elegant phrasing. Linda Berdoll’s mastery of Austen’s writing style is exquisite.

Riveting in parts, too slow in others
Revisado: 03-04-25
The story and characters are great, but much of the book is too mired in confusing detail and esoteric references. I finally got bogged down by the end of the second volume and will take a (long) break before deciding whether or not to continue.

Not very interesting
Revisado: 04-19-24
I’m a huge fan of P&P variations, and usually enjoy the many creative interpretations of the beloved characters, and surprising new plot developments. But this one didn’t do anything for me.

Disappointing!
Revisado: 12-10-23
I have to agree with other reviewers who were riveted by the original 3 books: this one is a bust. Don’t waste your time, money or credit. I found myself annoyed with the plot, the characters, and the reader.

A Not Scary Ghost Story
Revisado: 11-09-23
I love ghost stories, but they’re often too scary to read for relaxation. So it’s refreshing to find one that’s kind of sweet and charming and allows me to sleep at night. A simple murder conspiracy, a mysterious jewel heist, and a hundred year old mystery solved — what’s not to enjoy?

Historia
Set 5,000 years ago and ranging through what is now Montana, Wyoming, northern Colorado, and Utah, People of the Earth follows the migration of the Uto-Aztecan people south out of Canada. It is the unforgettable tale of a woman torn between two peoples and two dreams, of the two men who love her and the third who must have her, and of the vision given to the peoples long ago by the spirit of the wolf.

Good writing, characters, narration…..
Revisado: 10-31-23
But way too much mysticism and magic, which is usually something I enjoy. In this story though, every event and turn of plot is dictated by “Power,” as though the characters themselves have no say in the events that shape their lives. Apart from that, as with all Gear’s work, the story is a fascinating and meticulously researched study of how prehistoric people lived.

I wish I’d read the reviews more carefully
Revisado: 07-24-23
I was happily enjoying a sweet, charming period romance that was well written and well narrated through two thirds of the book — until the kind-hearted heroine lost her feisty independence and revealed a deep reliance on prayer and God to get her through the many complications she encountered. The last third of the book was off-putting because of the oft repeated references to God, but by that time I was invested in the charming characters and their fates, so I chose to finish it. But it changed my rating from 4 or 5 stars to 2. Readers more deeply religious than I am will no doubt enjoy this otherwise engaging story.

One stayed at home to raise her children and manage the family apple orchard; the other followed a dream and traveled the world to become a famous photojournalist. But when their beloved father falls ill, Meredith and Nina find themselves together again, standing alongside their cold, disapproving mother, Anya, who even now, offers no comfort to her daughters.

Not an easy book to read or listen to
Revisado: 03-03-23
This was a heartbreaking story about the siege of Leningrad and it’s devastating impact on one family. I felt much sorrow while reading it — you should be forewarned that it is relentlessly grim and joyless. I have enjoyed several of this author’s books very much (Nightingale, The Four Winds), others not so much (The Great Alone), but I feel like the writing in this one is far too melodramatic and over-wrought, detracting from the tragic events rather than eliciting true empathy for it. That said, I did finish it and found that there were reasons for writing the story in that manner. (Spoiler here: if you do embark on this sad story, maybe you’d like to know that there are some uplifting moments about the strength of family ties, amazing acts of individual heroism, and the durability of the human spirit in the face of hopeless despair.
