Historia
I'm Alexis Delaney. I'm your average 17-year-old girl. Except I can see the dead. And talk to the dead and help them move on. So...okay, I'm not your average 17-year-old girl. The Veil is still shut. Which means the dead can't move on, not on their own. Through my Link to the Veil, I've been able to start helping souls to cross. The Veil is changing, healing. Like I am. Since I came home from the hospital, I've been hiding behind my best friends. That's about to change. I want my life back. I'm ready to get back to normal. Then Sophie, the twins' little sister, tells me she's ready.

Not well written
Revisado: 03-11-25
This would have done well as a straightforward teen romance. The author, although a talented writer when it comes to a turn of phrase or a description, is not well versed in how to put a story together.Characters are simply dropped into the story with no explanation, and nothing to explain how they connect to the story ( for instance, the character of Serena just shows up even though they're apparently is a deep connection to the main character that is never explained). Likewise, elements of the story are never really explained. The Veil is in trouble, but what is the trouble? In addition, the major plot thread of the main character's Trauma from being kidnapped is completely mishandled. She specifically says she can't be touched anymore, can't hug the guy that used to like her, and yet she's crawling into the lap of all of her male friends constantly. It's one or the other, author, it can't be both. When I say it would do well as a team romance, I'm talking about the other minor annoyance with the story, every single character is described as gorgeous, from her friends, to random people, to even the adults. It was free for me to get this book so I can't complain too much, but there's no way I would have paid for this. On the other hand, the narrator is excellent, and I hope to hear other books from her in the future.

Unpacking her belongings in her new hometown of Portland, Oregon, herbalist and reformed alchemist Zoe Faust can't help but notice she's picked up a stowaway. Zoe, who's trying to put her old life behind her, isn't so sure she wants to reopen her alchemical past... until the dead man on her porch leaves her no choice.

Great if you have nothing else to read...
Revisado: 03-07-25
While the author is a talented writer and provides immersive descriptions of cooking, vegan foods, and the art of alchemy, the story suffers from a lack of imagination when it comes to the mystery plot. She honestly has her characters believe the killer must be one character in particular just because they come from Prague. At the end, the wrap up makes no sense whatsoever even if she manages to tie up most of the loose ends into an even looser bundle. At another point toward the end, the younger characters find the solution to a secondary plot while at school but then wait for hours to bring it to the attention of the main character even though it could mean another character's death, and nobody seems to even care about the delay. Except for issues like that, the book was enjoyable. The narrator is excellent and I would recommend any book that she reads. This one was free, and as a free book I would call it worth it, but it wasn't enough for me to go on to the next books. Hopefully the author gets more creative with the mysteries in the next books.

Historia
Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better? In The Midnight Library, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision.

Horrible message, so-so reader
Revisado: 02-10-25
Although it is well written, this is a horrible book with this horrible message: life is misery, get over it and just make due. Don't wish for something better because it will only make things worse. In this story, a woman whose life has imploded tries to kill herself. Without giving too much away, a magic library appears and offers her the chance to live other, unchosen paths. BUT, each time she finds a life where she's happy, it inexplicably ruins someone else's life. In one, her brother dies. In another, her father has an affair and her mother dies. It's every time without fail. Why? Because that is the author's theme. "You can't be happy without making other people suffer, so just do the suffering yourself so others can be happy." That isnt the truth, and it shouldnt be yours, either. On another point, the woman reading is pleasant to listen to, but can't do accents at all. The result is that everyone in the book is British whether they are or not. This was an acclaimed book but I don't know why. I actually regret listening to it.

Starts out great.....
Revisado: 11-20-24
I'm writing this review of the whole series on this book because we all start on book one, right? The performer is good but he often uses the wrong inflection. The series was enjoyable, and I loved book one, but book five has an ending that is at once stupid and completely obvious in its cliche. I nearly stopped listening after the one death because it ruined most of the storyline built up to that point. Characters acting against their established persona, hack twists, and so on. Not sure why the author chose to go in that direction. Read the first couple and put the series away and you'll walk away knowing the authir' s genus. Go further at your own risk

Watch the movie instead
Revisado: 06-17-24
I admit, I was looking for the movie. I understand that books are different however, and wasn't upset by the differences. I was however disappointed in the quality of the story. It leaves a lot to be desired, and is overly violent, and I definitely wasn't prepared for that. There's not even a definite ending to the book. Juvenile and places, it tries to overreach and doesn't make it. Much preferred the movie.

Good stories, but....
Revisado: 02-05-24
While the author is very imaginative, and engaging enough to make me want to read the entire series, I really wish she would do better research for the real world aspects of her story. It saddens me to know that she thinks someone can break into your house, tie you to a chair, and beat on you, and the police would only arrest them for trespass? She even made sure to have her characters stage the broken ropes and chair to make it appear the character had to escape his captors, and still had the police only arrest the bad guys for trespass. It is glaring plot holes like this one that keeps me from really enjoying her stories.

not what I thought
Revisado: 02-02-24
This would have done better as a short story. As a full length, I'll be at short, novel it meanders and includes many scenes that don't seem to connect with the overall story arc. Maybe if the author had concentrated less on multiple sex scenes, and more on the fantasy aspect of the story, it would have done better. I enjoyed it once, but probably won't keep it in my library.

To be fair, couldn't get past the second chapter.
Revisado: 03-12-23
I heard good things so I tried it. The writer must get better in later stories because this one is something of a train wreck. She seems to be just going through the motions because she forgets what she wrote in the previous paragraphs over and over. The main character has no food in the house... but then suddenly she had a bowl of fresh vegetables on the counter? I still don't understand if people know there's magic on this world or not, because the world building is sporadic at best. The narrator does this weird thing with her voice where it drops in volume at the end of most sentences. I kept thinking I was getting a text or something and my smart speaker was lowering the volume but no.... it was the narrator. No enjoyment. Deleted it from my device.

Great author, a few issues...
Revisado: 11-22-22
Thankfully, Briggs is a brilliant author. Unfortunately, she relies on plot devices to piece her stories together. Mercedes is under a death threat and being guarded by the wolves so what does she do? Slip out alone for a late night run. Why? because we needed an interaction between her and one of the vampires before the next scene could happen, and having her act like an idiot was the only way to make it happen. However, because Briggs is such a great writer, you look past most of this stuff. Enjoyable story. Three out of five stars.

Worth it, but...
Revisado: 08-26-22
Better than the first, without a doubt, and I was really enjoying it.. up until the last half. The big climax happened somewhere around the middle of the story and then we are left with the, let's say, emotional baggage of the main character to resolve. The story was really good until after that point, and I can only imagine that the author was being rushed to finish it, leaving us to endure such lame plot devices as the main character randomly stopping in the middle of the city, right where the bad guy happens to be (more than once).Or the unbelievable addition of three vampires who can walk around in sunlight, just because it has to fit in with the story. I will read the third one, because I'm sure she gets better as she goes along, I just wish her editors in these first few stories had been more observant.
