Gratuitous Gore, Boringly Read, Decades Old?
Revisado: 05-18-25
Let me first say that I have a medical background, as do most of my family, and don't tend to get squeamish. I have witnessed ERs and surgeries. I have read several of Slaughter's books, and found them largely engaging. This, however, was off the grid.
Everything from absurdly detailed autopsies, incest, rape, brutality, over-the-top grisly murder scene descriptions, abortions, STDs, abortions, disturbingly described surgical procedures, being buried alive....these are just some parts of the "entertainment" this book offers.
The extremely dated references in this book (clothing, music, etc.) seem clear evidence that this is NOT a new book, but one from last century ...SEVERAL decades old I am really, really tired of being taken by Audible this way...paying twice for the same book way too many times.
I also never write reviews; books are either interesting to me, or not...but that is largely subjective. But, I felt a warning was in order with this one. It is difficult for me to imagine this as enjoyable listening for anyone, regardless of their interests.

Historia
Sami Kierce, a young college grad backpacking in Spain with friends, wakes up one morning, covered in blood. There’s a knife in his hand. Beside him, the body of his girlfriend. Anna. Dead. He doesn’t know what happened. His screams drown out his thoughts—and then he runs. Twenty-two years later, Kierce, now a private investigator, is a new father who’s working off his debts by doing low level surveillance jobs and teaching wannabe sleuths at a night school in New York City. One evening, he recognizes a familiar face at the back of the classroom. Anna.

Cliche ridden and sappy
Revisado: 04-08-25
I have adored Coben’s work from the beginning. And, am trying to work my way through the TV adaptations even though it’s difficult with so many in different languages. While many of his characters are characterized by wise-cracking, this main character is both sappy, often droning on and on about life’s teachings, and clearly can’t say much without his oft discussed “witty repartee”. Turning nearly every line into sarcastic zingers or puns seems very juvenile; like he is trying to seem “cool” to kids. While I enjoy good wit as much as anyone, this gets very lame and tiresome. He seems determined to make his less-cool characters sound as though they were always speaking to teenagers…trying to use their lingo. And sadly, it comes off to me like trying too hard. This is probably the only Coben book I have been disappointed in. An older author trying to sound “with it”.

Audible has gotten out of control with re-issues
Revisado: 02-13-25
ANOTHER reissue frames as a new release. I have gotten to the point where I don’t want anything more from this author, although she has been one of my favorites. And, they won’t allow me to return it. A total waste of a credit.

Waste! Another reissued book!!
Revisado: 02-09-25
I’ve about gotten to the point where I will stop buying books from this author. This was originally published 4 years ago, but it is listed as a new book! I listen to hundreds of books, so don’t necessarily remember all the titles. This is ridiculous!

“Misery” ripoff
Revisado: 02-05-25
Well worn and predictable plot, all too close to the movie “Misery”. I thought this author was better than that. Convoluted ending.

Historia
Newly minted doctor Jane McGill is in hell. Not literally, of course. But between her drug addict patients, sleepless nights on call, and battling wits with the sadistic yet charming Sexy Surgeon, Jane can’t imagine an afterlife much worse than her first month of medical internship at County Hospital. And then there’s the devil herself: Jane’s senior resident Dr. Alyssa Morgan. When Alyssa becomes absolutely hell-bent on making her new interns pay tenfold for the deadly sin of incompetence, Jane starts to worry that she may not make it through the year with her soul or her sanity still intact.

NOT NEW
Revisado: 11-07-24
a waste of money or a credit every time Audible puts out a “new” book…and it’s a repeat of what you’ve already purchased and listened to. Then, if it is cash, you can’t return it. Misleading and unfair to this of us who have purchased several hundred books.

Either the writer or the narrator doesn’t know past tenses
Revisado: 08-07-24
I haven’t read the actual books by this author, but I seriously hope he has a good editor, if he doesn’t know how to use the correct past tenses. The story was good, if very drawn out, and the narration was essentially good; but i would love to know if the narrator changed things as he read. It really ruins it for me when an author doesn’t use good grammar.

Historia
The site of the old campus bungalow where two girls were brutally slain is now a flower patch covered with chrysanthemums. It's been 50 years since the Immaculate Conception Murders. Three more students and a teacher were killed in a sickening spree that many have forgotten. But there is one person who knows every twisted detail... Hannah O'Rourke and her volatile half-sister, Eden, have little in common except a parent. Yet they've ended up at the same small college outside Chicago, sharing a bungalow with another girl.

The absolute worst narrator
Revisado: 08-01-24
This must be a first time narrator. She absolutely mangled the story, putting over-the-top exaggerated stress on every word of every sentence. She also had no concept of sound balance (or bad sound engineering), because in order to listen, you have to keep adjusting the volume from barely audible to ear splitting. The only reason I forged through was that the author is normally one of my favorites. Interesting how a narrator can make or break a book. I couldn’t even tell if the writing was any good, as the narration was so ridiculously over-the-top. I would definitely not pay for this audiobook.

"There’s someone I want you to meet," Belle says, as a man draws up to her side. He’s tall with dark hair and stubble on his square jaw. He’s not exactly smiling, but the corner of his mouth curls upwards as he slides his hand around my daughter’s waist.

Male author makes shallow female characters
Revisado: 03-22-24
While some of the male characters were fleshed out, the females were caricatures. Actually, except for the older son, most characters were extremely shallow, pathetic, and uninteresting. The plot could have made a good story, but it was poorly developed.
