Writing was very annoying; not good for audio format

I am not sure if it is the writing or how the narrator was reading it but I found myself getting very annoyed with: “Kate said, “Sam said”, “he said” etc. after every single line of dialogue no matter how short the sentence or how obvious it was who the speaker was. I gave up on the book after about 4 chapters as a result. Not a winner in my view and I would recommend skipping it.

Fascinating story

This book is an incredibly detailed history of the building of the Panama Canal. The only complaint I had is that is was difficult to keep track of the “players” particularly during the timeframe when the French attempted to build the canal. The narrator was using the proper French pronunciation I believe but it sounded stilted - hence the 4 stars for narration. I decided to listen to this in advance of a Panama Canal cruise so I knew the history and I am happy I did so. It should make going through the canal much more interesting.

I loved the little house books as a child. The real life of Laura Ingalls Wilder and her complicated relationship with her unconventional (for the time) daughter is even more interesting. Highly recommend.

Narrator is amazing. 5+ rating if I could give it.

If you like fantasy based in reality, you will like this book. The narrator is one of the best I have heard. She voiced dozens of characters with different accents and voices and kept them consistent over the three books in this series. She made listening to this series completely enjoyable. I will be looking for other books narrated by this reader.

Story draws you in

I started listening to this story as it was picked for my book club. Once I started I could not stop until I finished it. Narrator is very good and there is an interesting twist at the end that I did not see coming.
