Historia
Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

A fascinating story inside circus life
Revisado: 04-29-25
I’ve heard of this book, glad to finally read it. It’s dark but exactly what I thought circus life would be like. I especially liked that the two main characters were intelligent, classy characters who also happened to love circus life.
I never like tough language or sexual descriptions, but this story had only appropriate and balanced amounts of both.

Historia
The role of organized religion in our society is undergoing monumental changes. Church attendance is decreasing at unprecedented rates. At the same time, there is an increase in the number of people who identify as “spiritual but not religious.” Clearly, the need for religion remains as strong as ever, yet more and more, people are seeking spirituality elsewhere. Why? What accounts for these trends? Can organized religion still play a valuable role in today’s world?

Beautiful, Important Message
Revisado: 04-23-25
The message is profound and universally helpful in spiritual growth. Examples, quotes, and concepts are powerful, even life-changing. A truly worthwhile book.
But the delivery was awkward, to the point of mechanical. Some will give up rather than pursue the full message and reap the benefits, simply because of the delivery.
