Historia
Private Detective Cormoran Strike is visiting his family in Cornwall when he is approached by a woman asking for help finding her mother, Margot Bamborough - who went missing in mysterious circumstances in 1974. Strike has never tackled a cold case before, let alone one 40 years old. But despite the slim chance of success, he is intrigued and takes it on; adding to the long list of cases that he and his partner in the agency, Robin Ellacott, are currently working on.

Long and tedious, Robert or JK
Revisado: 12-10-20
Some authors should have to write their books in long hand with paper and a quill. I thought this was so long and so tedious I couldn't wait for it to be over. You can say what you like about her fame and fortune in her writing, but this one is a dreadful story. Of course I had to listen to the whole thing through to find out who done it. But now, I couldn't tell you who did and I don't care! Narration was terrific but how could anyone keep the characters, important and not, straight? And the three-times- repeated, gory details of captured women was unncessary and purely sensational. Blagh!

Historia
The Borgia family have become a byword for evil. Corruption, incest, ruthless megalomania, avarice, and vicious cruelty - all have been associated with their name. And yet, paradoxically, this family lived when the Renaissance was coming into its full flowering in Italy. Examples of infamy flourished alongside some of the finest art produced in western history.

Historia
On Winston Churchill’s first day as prime minister, Adolf Hitler invaded Holland and Belgium. Poland and Czechoslovakia had already fallen, and the Dunkirk evacuation was just two weeks away. For the next 12 months, Hitler would wage a relentless bombing campaign, killing 45,000 Britons. It was up to Churchill to hold his country together and persuade President Franklin Roosevelt that Britain was a worthy ally - and willing to fight to the end. In The Splendid and the Vile, Erik Larson shows how Churchill taught the British people "the art of being fearless."

The story is monumental and the reader is the best. Never boring, never affected. Great detail and bracing, well- rounded portrayals of the people we've heard so much about. Inspiring!

Historia
At the dawn of the last millennium in the year 1000, Europe was one of the world's more stagnant regions-an economically undeveloped, intellectually derivative, and geopolitically passive backwater, with illiteracy, starvation, and disease the norm for almost everyone. Yet only three centuries later, all of this had changed.

Thorough, detailed and fascinatng!
Revisado: 11-24-19
The subject matter was great! A period I thought of as quiet and comparatively dull, is bursting with importance for European civilization. This course is detailed and informative about ordinary life as well as the historic events of the 300 years it covers. But, the professor/speaker has a very off-putting way of speaking. I almost despaired of going on with the course, but I persisted and I either got used to it, or with practice, he eased off on his really annoying manner. Now, if only Great Courses would realize how silly the trumpets and the applause sound, and cut them out them!
Over-all a very good listen!

Look beyond the abstract dates and figures, kings and queens, and battles and wars that make up so many historical accounts. Over the course of 48 richly detailed lectures, Professor Garland covers the breadth and depth of human history from the perspective of the so-called ordinary people, from its earliest beginnings through the Middle Ages.

glimpses of many early civilizations
Revisado: 01-03-19
Good lectures with much of interest in these ancient civilizations. One gets a little tired of the lecturer's many quips which I guess he feels are funny, but these one can overlook. I love any ancient history, so it furthered my understanding of many of them.

Historia
From Scotland's most exciting up-and-coming mystery novelist comes a story of Lachlan Harriot, a man who refuses to believe his wife, Susie, is a killer, even though she had been working with Andrew Gow, a paroled serial killer, as his court-appointed psychologist, when she was found covered in blood near the spot where his and his wife's bodies were discovered. Desperate to clear his wife's name, Lachlan searches her home office for proof of her innocence.

not a wow but good stuff
Revisado: 01-03-19
I liked this book as I look back on it. It is not like most mystery stories, but more subtle and nuanced. You don't know at first who is bad and who isn't. It keeps you guessing as you hear the reflections of a man who has been left with ababy to care for while his wife has a) disappeared and b) is then charged with murder. I got a little tired of the voice of the husband/father and he tells the whole story, but overall, it was good!

Historia
An isolated beach on the island of Guernsey in the English Channel is the scene of the murder of Guy Brouard, one of Guernsey's wealthiest inhabitants and its main benefactor. Forced as a child to flee the Nazis in Paris, Brouard was engaged in his latest project when he died: a museum in honor of those who resisted the German occupation of the island during World War II. It is from this period of time that his murderer may well have come. But there are others on Guernsey with reason to want Guy Brouard dead....

never again
Revisado: 05-20-17
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
I vowed I'd never read/listen to another E. George novel unless it was abridged. Now I vow I will never read/listen to another abridged or not. Lame plot, cliche after cliche, no character development.
What could Elizabeth George have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Not written it.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Simon Jones?
The narration couldn't save it or make it any worse.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
disappointment

Good content, good information - I think
Revisado: 03-08-16
If you could sum up The Modern Scholar: Medieval Mysteries in three words, what would they be?
good content, information
Did Thomas F. Madden do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
Not relevant here
Any additional comments?
The mysteries he selects to talk about are interesting topics and if I had to guess, I think he gave good information about them. Much of the history comes from primary sources and I am always impressed with that. I can only believe it because it makes sense. I have never been able to believe that chastity belts were a real thing!

Sunday sermonette
Revisado: 03-08-16
What did you like best about Yes Please? What did you like least?
I found the book to be preachy. I loved Tina Fey's memoir, but this one, not so much. Everybody she mentions is fabulous and the most fun and funny, and she loves him/her, and everything she has learned should be believed and all her life lessons should be followed. Her candor is good, but it just reads too much like a lesson. Or a hundred and three lessons.
What could Amy Poehler have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
don't know
What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
It's fun to listen to her voice.
Did Yes Please inspire you to do anything?
No, but I felt her wanting to inspire me all down the road. That doesn't appeal to me.
