Very onfusing characters. I had to repeatedly listen to certain chapters to figure out who was who. This took away from my enjoyment. I never figured out some of them.

Historia
Harry August is on his deathbed. Again. No matter what he does or the decisions he makes, when death comes, Harry always returns to where he began, a child with all the knowledge of a life he has already lived a dozen times before. Nothing ever changes. Until now. As Harry nears the end of his 11th life, a little girl appears at his bedside. "I nearly missed you, Doctor August", she says. "I need to send a message". This is the story of what Harry does next, and what he did before, and how he tries to save a past he cannot change and a future he cannot allow.

Dark. Pompous. Gory. Didn’t Finish.
Revisado: 06-13-24
I love time travel stories. This has all the makings of a great tale. But it’s dark, conflicted, sociopathic. I made it about 60% through. The violence was disturbing. At first I rationalized that the matter-of-fact torture and murder was situational and would not define the story. The two incidents describing the *extreme mutilation and torture* of a child and infant (done by the “good” guys) made my throat close and my mind felt wounded. But I kept hoping it would all make sense. Ultimately, I heard one too many deliberate murders justified, expounded upon and twisted into a bizarre meaning. I questioned why I was forcing myself to be unhappy. Why was I getting into my car after work, dreading listening to this book, but still enduring it? Today I realized our protagonist is a twisted, self-important sociopath whose world is amoral and gray. I didn’t want him near me. I marked this as finished, decided to give a review and delete the book. I already feel lighter. I detest Harry.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

I’m in love w/ the characters. Unexpected twists. LOVE this book.
Revisado: 06-01-24
About 1/3 of the way through I knew I liked the book but I was waiting for an event. A focal point of action. But then I realized this was simply a story about wonderful characters and I should just sit back and see where we were going. The author understands the mind of young men so well and as a mother of a boy that resonated with me. Slowly I began to fall in love with the characters. I rooted for them deeply. The story kept building, building and finally unfurled like a beautiful, bittersweet, celebratory, altogether satisfying symphony. There were a few twists, some big and some small, I didn’t see coming which delighted me. This isn’t a book that will change your life but I feel better for reading it. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Main Character Frustratingly Naïve & Weak
Revisado: 04-25-24
I liked the plot. The development of the antagonist was interesting and there was a twist I considered but was still surprised when it was revealed. But the main character, Alex, as likable as she was, literally invited danger into her life. As evil entered and kept showing its true self, over and over she silenced her inner voice and put her family at risk because she was too weak, too polite, unable to set even the most basic boundaries. It was to the point that her unwavering politeness made her a bad mother. I kept asking , “What are you thinking and why are you not saying NO?”. The climax, instead of leaving me moved, left me irritated at the heroine’s culpability. Finally, it was as if she felt the repercussions but not in a way most people would. Her reaction was dulled and where normal people would have lost their minds she sort of sat back and waited with muted anxiety. She was weird and I didn’t respect her as a strong woman, protective mother/wife. You know the movies where the main characters are running from the vampire? - and they can either go into the church and dissolve him with holy water OR run into a cemetery and hide in a crypt - and they choose the cemetery. And you’re thinking WTH? And part of you feels that they chose calamity through stupidity? That’s how I felt with this main character.

Wonderful, Fun Book
Revisado: 04-01-24
I didn’t even want to listen to this book. I’m a 50 yr old woman and I was looking for a light children’s book to pass time simply to fall asleep one night. Within 10 minutes I was completely hooked. I fell in love with each character and I couldn’t stop listening. After work I found myself looking forward to getting in my car to find out what happened to Sophie and Howl. The narrator is EXCELLENT and is the perfect person for this book. What a sweet gem of a story. It made me happy to hear it.

Historia
Alex Armstrong has changed everything about herself—her name, her appearance, her backstory. She’s no longer the terrified teenager a rapt audience saw on television, emerging in handcuffs from the quiet suburban home the night her family was massacred. That girl, Alexandra Quinlan, nicknamed Empty Eyes, was accused of the killings, fought to clear her name, and later took the stand during her highly publicized defamation lawsuit that captured the attention of the nation. It’s been ten years since, and Alex hasn’t stopped searching for answers about the night her family was killed.

Great storyline with good twists. I couldn’t stop listening. I had to keep track of the characters and write down who and what they were. That made the story easier to enjoy.

Way too much violent caveman romance
Revisado: 03-30-24
I’ve wanted to read this book for years. I loved the story. Loved the characters. But the caveman romance / SA violence was too much. I understand the characters are lower on the evolutionary chain and things were violent and babies were made. But this was SO MUCH!It was gratuitous and by the end I was sick of it. Yet, I still liked the characters and wanted to read the 2nd book. It was the same - a caveman romance novel with graphic scenes galore and 2/3 through I put it down and walked away. Not my cup of tea.

Historia
By the time she was in her late 20s, Tara Schuster was a rising TV executive who had worked for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and helped launch Key & Peele to viral superstardom. By all appearances, she had mastered being a grown-up. But beneath that veneer of success, she was a chronically anxious, self-medicating mess. No one knew that her road to adulthood had been paved with depression, anxiety, and shame. Buy Yourself the F*cking Lilies is the story of Tara’s path to re-parenting herself and becoming a "ninja of self-love".

Maybe good for younger crowd?
Revisado: 10-05-20
I’m 50. Like most, I’m beginning a new chapter in my life and was interested in hearing about the author’s journey. She’s very funny and very smart. She also narrates wonderfully. For me, hearing about the dysfunction that was her childhood and then adult life was fine for about 15 minutes. Anything after that felt like I was her therapist. Retelling how bad it was, how sad she was, just exactly how painful life became ... it was onerous and depressing. I kept listening because I thought once she got through the dismal part of her life she would move on with positivity and joy to the journey of self love. While she did get to the journey, it was full of continuous references - maybe to provide contrast - to just how bad it was. It seemed to me that while she has transformed her life she brought her baggage with her and then unpacked it with me piece by piece. This is a book better read by a younger audience. At the ripe age of 50 I find that I spend less time concentrating on what was and more on the journey of soul in the present. Ultimately, this isn’t a book about how “we” can move forward. It’s her book of what her life was and how she moved forward. It’s very self centered. That’s not a bad thing. It’s just not what I was looking for. Eventually I scrapped the book. I simply couldn’t sit for another hour and sift through the wreckage of her life to find bits of hope and light for her. In my 20’s I may have found the experience of becoming overly intimate with childhood trauma useful. At 50, I simply wanted to go meditate and restore myself after listening.
