Not only was Eric Metaxas’ “Bonhoeffer” a phenomenal exploration into such a complicated, convicted individual, but the audio production was simply excellent. Highly recommend for history buffs, theology nerds, and those who want to better understand the religious politics of the Second World War.

There is no doubt that we all are works in progress, and R. Kent Hughes certainly makes the case that we ought to become more disciplined as a result. While I don’t know if I agreed with every single point or suggestion, his thoughts on becoming better men to better reflect Jesus Christ were profound.

“Wait for Signs” is a delightful collection of twelve short stories by Craig Johnson set throughout the “Longmire” canon that really emphasize the grace and charm of our favorite Absaroka County sheriff. Walt is just a great character, and his adventures in northern Wyoming are always enjoyable no matter if he’s driving down back roads or solving crimes. If you’re a fan of Johnson’s work, “Wait for Signs” is a must-read.

Having wanted to read “The Vigilantes of Montana” for a while, this book gave some fascinating insights into the actions of the Montana Vigilantes who banded together to battle the band of road agents known as “the Innocents” in the early 1860s. Written from the Vigilante’s perspective, this reads as a justification of their actions. While some revisionist historians would like us to think that the Innocents were in fact innocent (namely one Henry Plummer), Thomas J. Dimsdale presents a solid case for why they did what they did.

“Open Season” is the first of the “Joe Pickett” series of novels by C.J. Box on which the Paramount series of the same name is based. It’s an excellent neo-Western crime story with well-rounded characters, a relatable protagonist, and some intense drama. The audiobook is wonderful, and David Chandler is the perfect voice for Joe’s literary adventures. Don’t miss out on this one!

Not only is Mike Duran’s Souther Gothic short story an easy listen, but the narrator was the perfect choice to embody Jolene Haddan. The audio quality itself was a little off (hence 4/5 stars), but this is otherwise a great folklorish tale that’s worth the listen!

Not only is Stephen King’s trademark vampire novel excellent, but the audio book perfectly brings the tale to life in a chilling and undeniable way. Highly recommend if you’re a fan of the book (or if it’s your first time)!

Fun Comeback Overshadowed By Later Revivals

No doubt, after a long spell without DD & GA as Mulder and Scully, “The X-Files: Cold Cases” is a fun return to Chris Carter’s world. Based on the IDW comics written by Joe Harris (which are generally better than the actual television revival), “Cold Cases” brings to life the first five arcs of the comic series with (most of) the original “X-Files” cast in tow.

The audio drama itself is okay. It’s well-produced, but DD sounds as if he’s reading the script as-is. Yes, Mulder can be dry anyway, but if he’s normally somewhat dry, then DD here is dehydrated. GA is a delight as always, as is MP and the Lone Gunmen crew.

All-in-all, “Cold Cases” is a mostly well-made audio production, but a poor return to “The X-Files” when pit up against previous media. Harris’ story is hacked up to fit the audio drama model, and though it gets the gist, one can’t help but feel just a little disappointed.

Not Your Usual Longmire Story

Fans of Craig Johnson’s Walt Longmire books will note that “Depth of Winter” is unlike previous installments. There’s no big mystery, the usual recurring characters are largely absent, and we don’t hardly step foot in Walt’s Wyoming homeland, but that doesn’t stop this from being an exciting thriller with lots of beautiful imagery.

While George Guidall’s narration is slightly off (others have pointed out the mispronunciation of the antagonist’s name), he’s still the best audio representation of Walt out there. “Depth of Winter” may not be everyone’s favorite Longmire novel, but it’s a solid entry that concludes a chapter in the series we’ve long been awaiting.
