Historia
G. Willow Wilson’s debut novel Alif the Unseen was an NPR and Washington Post Best Book of the Year, and it established her as a vital American Muslim literary voice. Now she delivers The Bird King, a stunning new novel that tells the story of Fatima, a concubine in the royal court of Granada, the last emirate of Muslim Spain, and her dearest friend Hassan, the palace mapmaker. Hassan has a secret - he can draw maps of places he’s never seen and bend the shape of reality.

Terrible Narrator for a Beautiful Book
Revisado: 03-14-20
I don't like lambasting narrators -- most of the time I think it's a personal preference thing-- but wow! This is really hard to listen to! The narrator has strange pauses mid-sentence, or ends a sentence in a strange run on fashion. I spent half my time listening trying to figure out where the pauses actually should be.
This is a shame because the book is beautiful. It's a melancholic story about self reflection with a certain amount of magical realism, and 2 characters that are in deep non-romantic love for eachother. It is an absolute treat and I found the ending bittersweet but lovely.
I really want to recommend this book-- But I can't recommend the audiobook

Miracle Springs is a place of healing. Strangers flock there hoping that the natural hot springs, five-star cuisine, and renowned spa can cure their ills. And, if none of that works, they often find their way to Miracle Books, where, over a fresh-baked scone from the Gingerbread House bakery, they exchange their stories with owner Nora Pennington in return for a carefully chosen book. That's Nora's special talent: prescribing the perfect novel to ease a person's deepest pain and lighten their heaviest burden.

20% DNF -- Uncomfortable emphasis on Race
Revisado: 03-10-20
I liked the writing on this and where the story was going, but Gol-LY the author could NOT stop talking about how one of the main characters is black. No one else's race is ever mentioned. Instead there is just a weird uncomfortable emphasis on her being black, and not in an insightful meaningful way but more like "Some of my best friends are black!" It felt really bad, and made me super nervous where it was going to go.

Historia
A century from now, thanks to a technology allowing instantaneous travel across light-years, humanity has solved its energy shortages, cleaned up the environment, and created far-flung colony worlds. The keys to this empire belong to the powerful North family - composed of successive generations of clones. Yet these clones are not identical. For one thing, genetic errors have crept in with each generation. For another, the original three clone "brothers" have gone their separate ways, and the branches of the family are now friendly rivals more than allies. Or maybe not so friendly....

Great Story-- but the female chars were abysmal
Revisado: 04-27-19
The story in this book is awesome! I loved the murder mystery -- I was constantly wondering who did it -- the plot that encompasses some 50 characters, multiple worlds, multiple generations, clones, near tech, genetic engineering, and just good old fashioned detective work.
But omg, I just can't recommend this book, because the women in this book are AWFUL. They are all flat, and are all described by how they are "Still hot, despite being a mother of 3" and I just can't. All the men want to be with young hot girls, and all the women have no drive except to stay hot. They are all vacuous, and honestly annoying.

Then a drool-worthy man shows up at her door claiming that he accidentally bit Marty. And since he's a werewolf, she is now, too. 5 subtle racists comments later--I'm done
Revisado: 12-18-18
I tried to like this. But by the 3rd chapter, and the 5th subtly racist jibe, I'm done.
It's always about secondary characters, and it's just flavor text. I originally thought it was a character flaw, but by now I'm sure it's an author flaw. None of it is aggressive, it's just all sterotypes-- and I'm OVER it!

Pride and Prejudice -- but warmer
Revisado: 11-14-18
Its all about the characters in this one. And the book added a lot of them. But Jodi did a wonderful job juggling all of them, and having me care for all of them, and just be happy to hang out with them for a little while.
Its a feel good book about everyone meeting up at just the right time!

Historia
The Borderlands aren't like anywhere else. Don't try to smuggle a phone or any other piece of technology over the wall that marks the Border - unless you enjoy a fireworks display in your backpack. (Ballpoint pens are okay.) There are elves, harpies, and - best of all as far as Elliot is concerned - mermaids. Elliot? Who's Elliot? Elliot is 13 years old. He's smart and just a tiny bit obnoxious. Sometimes more than a tiny bit. When his class goes on a field trip and he can see a wall that no one else can see, he is given the chance to go to school in the Borderlands.

Pure Of Heart Queer Content
Revisado: 11-14-18
This book is so sweet and pure, I literally cried.
I have to say, reading the synopsis, I didn’t think this book was for me. “13yro boy goes to a magic land and meets a hot elf girl” isn’t for me. But really it’s like the TV show the magicians, but pure, more insightful, more inner reflection, healthier relationships , and it ends happily. Magic and a new land don’t solve your problems, only you can
This book is also amazing at just expressing friendships. People can be flawed, but still want the best for each other. They can still express love for each other. And I was so genuinely happy for everyone
I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone!

Assassin School, And Book 2 is even Better
Revisado: 08-28-18
Came to write this after reading book 2, and I can sincerely say it makes me love book 1 even more.
It's pretty typical for a trilogy to have a great first book, and then a filler second book to set up for a thrilling conclusion. But I can honestly say that book 2 was also incredible. It's probably because book 1 is pretty small in its scope, it focuses primarily on Assassin School (I concept that I love) The classes, classmates, and teachers are all fantastic. The Narrator is witty, with a delightfully morbid and grotesque sense of humor. And the observations are all poignant but not overly dramatic. The book ends with school graduation, and book 2 is about the beginning of life after graduation. The world expands as Mia walks through it, and some mysteries brought up in book 1 are answered in book 2. I cannot wait for the 3rd book, as I expect the world and scope to expand once again.

Predictable Mystery, Unpredictable Lovable Chars
Revisado: 08-28-18
This isn't really a mystery book, because as I said, I guessed the truth in about 2 chapters. But honestly that's not the point. This book is much more about the characters, the huge family, and how they interplay with each other. I love these kinds of books, but I often think Authors write the characters as a bit unlikeable so that the interplay is more interesting. Not so with this book, I found myself actually cheering on every single character. Even ones that were jerks in the beginning, I really genuinely loved by the end. Also the humor! I LOVED how all the characters talked and had very distinctly different voices and personalities. I found myself hopelessly giggling!
And everything concludes so happily, I found myself sniffling, it's a really wonderful book.
Would recommend if you liked The Forgotten Garden, or Bridget Jones Diary

Exactly the Light Funny Romance I love
Revisado: 08-28-18
I am a HUGE fan of British-y romances with 'proper' characters that 'shock' society, main girl characters that have clever witty banter with the love interest, and a ridiculous set of circumstances where the characters HAVE to do over the top flirty things. I am happy to say this book checks off every single one of these!
**SPOILERS**
This hits some of my all time favorite tropes such as: There's only One Bed, Banter to Love, She's Engaged to Someone Else, and We Have to Kiss to Stay Undercover
Highly recommended

My fave Pierce Series
Revisado: 08-16-18
I love this series.
The girl is not a fighter, but spends most of her time spying, gathering information, setting up traps, and manipulating people for good ends. It’s much more about getting information and organizing people, and task management with a bit of secretive danger. Sly feels fully realized and competent. She doesn’t have a ton of character growth, but that’s alright, it’s more about her growing the nation.
