Historia
Jack Kerouac’s archive is vast. Throughout his life he was constantly writing, and he meticulously saved and catalogued his material. The result is that beyond the work published in his lifetime there has been a rich stream of posthumous writing that is far from tapped. This collection of previously unpublished writing culled from the Kerouac archive, and as a companion to Paul Maher Jr.'s Becoming Kerouac, spans Kerouac’s adult life, from a journal written at age seventeen to autobiographical reflections a few years before his death.

The compilers of this huge volume add enough context via footnotes, etc., to show how the author and his style evolved overtime.

The perfect book for the right kind of writer
Revisado: 08-04-22
This book is so good. I’m perplexed by the negative reviews. Don’t let them stop you from trying this book which I now like better than any other I’ve read on the subject (Bird by Bird, On Writing, etc). Excellent narration too.

The Audible version of People of Walmart
Revisado: 03-28-22
As a small town resident, I’ve enjoyed listening to a variety of essays, podcasts, radio shows, etc, which fictionalize poke fun of small town life. I enjoy this very much, and usually find an element of love underlying whatever fun is had at our expense. I was ecstatic to see see one of my favorite actors/writers had created what I thought would be such a show. But it’s clear that there’s no Homage to the small town in ‘Summer in Argyle”. A parade of stereotypes and unconvincing dialog is painted over by an immersive soundscape of people clearing their throats and dogs barking, a brute force attempt to place the listener into a completely affectionless world. It’s Lake Wobegone after the successful invasion of the body snatchers.

Perhaps all of Jonathan Ames' problems, and the genesis of this hilarious audiobook, can be traced back to the late onset of his puberty. After all, it can't be easy to be 16 with a hairless penis "undistinguishable from that of a five-year-old's".

Truth and Fidelity
Revisado: 12-09-21
Ames convinces us that redemption comes through absolute truth and fidelity to language. I don’t believe there is a better writer and somehow Ames has created a style through this memoir and his novels that is new and unique. I’m not smart enough to name it or classify it but I suspect that it’s true. Convince me that I’m wrong and that there is another like him please.

Revisado: 11-15-21
Provides the context for everything you’ve heard out of context about Morrissey, and context, as it turns out, is everything. A book for fans of music and literature, the prose is delicious to those of us who consider the words of Morrissey’s music delicious. Spoiler alert: Turns out Morrissey is a human being, as we all are.

Historia
For more than 25 years, David Sedaris has been carving out a unique literary space, virtually creating his own genre. A Sedaris story may seem confessional, but is also highly attuned to the world outside. It opens our eyes to what is at absurd and moving about our daily existence. And it is almost impossible to listen without laughing.

Historia
Happy Doll is a charming, if occasionally inexpert, private detective living just one sheer cliff drop beneath the Hollywood sign with his beloved half-Chihuahua half-Terrier, George. A veteran of both the Navy and LAPD, Doll supplements his meager income as a P.I. by working through the night at a local Thai spa that offers its clients a number of special services. Armed with his 16-inch steel telescopic baton, biting dry humor, and just a bit of a hero complex, the ex-cop sets out to protect the women who work there from clients who have trouble understanding the word "no".

Brilliant and fresh
Revisado: 08-03-21
So much more than noir though perfectly satisfying in the context of the genre. Love the narration too. It feels like Ames knows something; like he’s pushing through a boundary. Like he is iterating on what a novel is.

Insights into the life of a unique man.
Revisado: 07-20-21
I learned about business and life reading this book and was touched by its authenticity and honesty. If you wish you could have gotten advice from the great community builder of our time, odds are the advice you want is in this book. Humbled that it’s offered at so little cost but that’s just like the Miller family. Thanks for inviting us to share these moments with you.

The only review that matters
Revisado: 07-02-21
Not only is this one of the best books I’ve “read”, it’s even better after having read all the one star reviews which miss the point of the novel. Also, in chapter 4 there is a list of all of the main character’s sport coats which works better than ASMR to put me to sleep and therefore accordingly I suggest you don’t drive while listening to this portion.
