Historia
Exiled from Downing Street, Boris Johnson may now be best known as the latest GB News presenter. His former senior advisor Dominic Cummings has reinvented himself as political pundit. And Liz Truss and Kwasi Kwarteng have been ejected from high-level politics since their infamous mini budget of 2022. But the chumocracy is far from over.

Shockingly not shocking
Revisado: 09-10-24
I previously read Simon Kupers book Chums, and really liked it. Good chaps follows the same model, but covers outright corruption instead. It shows very well the corruption of the UK political system, and how attempts to rein it in have failed. I highly recommend the book. Wish it was longer and provided more details to build its case.

Graham Greene’s evocative analysis of the love of self, the love of another, and the love of God is an English classic that has been translated for the stage, the screen, and even the opera house. Academy Award-winning actor Colin Firth (The King’s Speech, A Single Man) turns in an authentic and stirring performance for this distinguished audio release.

Not quite interesting

First part was interesting, and I especially liked how the pain of the characters came through very credibly. But then the story just became too long-winded and less interesting. Colin Firth however did an excellent as narrator.

Maps have a mysterious hold over us. Whether ancient, crumbling parchments or generated by Google, maps tell us things we want to know, not only about our current location or where we are going but about the world in general. And yet, when it comes to geo-politics, much of what we are told is generated by analysts and other experts who have neglected to refer to a map of the place in question.

Excellent overview of geopolitics

Great introduction to key conflicts around the globe, and the role geography plays or has played in geopolitics. Covers all major areas although at a high level. Excellent narration too.

Historia
In When McKinsey Comes to Town, two prizewinning investigative journalists have written a portrait of the company sharply at odds with its public image. Bogdanich and Forsythe have penetrated the veil of secrecy surrounding McKinsey by conducting hundreds of interviews, obtaining tens of thousands of revelatory documents, and following rule #1 of investigative reporting: Follow the money. When McKinsey Comes to Town is a a devastating portrait of a firm whose work has often made the world more unequal, more corrupt, and more dangerous.

Important book
Revisado: 03-07-24
Important book with well-researched stories that McKinsey cannot be proud of. Although I knew of some, I was still surprised about the magnitude and severity of them.
Missing more insights on the underlaying causes that makes McKinsey behave this way as a corporate (not all consultancies or corporates behave this way). Why so many problems with governance, conflicts of interest, sheer corruption and criminality? And why does business continue to employ them?

Historia
You may be surprised to learn that microchips are the new oil—the scarce resource on which the modern world depends. Today, military, economic, and geopolitical power are built on a foundation of computer chips. Virtually everything—from missiles to microwaves—runs on chips, including cars, smartphones, the stock market, even the electric grid. Until recently, America designed and built the fastest chips and maintained its lead as the #1 superpower, but America’s edge is in danger of slipping, undermined by players in Taiwan, Korea, and Europe taking over manufacturing.

Loved this book. Captivating story which is written in an exciting, relevant and timely way.
Unfortunately, the narration sounds like a computer speaking.

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Not so interesting love letter to family
Revisado: 01-25-24
I came to this book, as a non-American in search for insights about Trump country, the values they have and what led them there.
The author describes the stereotypical love of family, church and army, but also deeply flawed people that struggle through drugs, violence, poverty and other adverse circumstances to survive and provide for their kids. Through it all, the author describes their shortcomings, while emphasising his profound love for his family and the people who supported him.
But I never felt he really got in depth with why people think the way they do. Why the love of guns for example? His account remains relatively superficial, and becomes more of a tale of how he overcame the challenges he was facing.
Through it all, I had a nagging feeling that it was a superficial though convenient love letter to low-income whites from an author with political ambitions (now mentioned as candidate for a Trump VP).

Historia
Known as the "Wizard of the Kremlin," the enigmatic Vadim Baranov was a TV producer before becoming a political advisor to Putin, aka "The Czar." After his resignation from this position, legends about him multiply, with no one able to distinguish truth from fiction. Until one night, when he tells his story to the narrator of this book. He immerses us in the heart of the Russian state, where sycophants and oligarchs have been engaging in open warfare, and where Vadim, now the regime's main spin doctor, turns an entire country into an avant-garde political stage.

The Kremlin and what comes after….
Revisado: 01-20-24
Interesting and original perspective on how the Kremlin became what it is under Putin, as seen from the perspective of his spin doctor. And equally a perspective of what the future looks like for Russians and the rest of us.
Very well written and narrated. Highly recommend it.

Historia
There is nothing more essential to our health and well-being than breathing. Yet, as a species, humans have lost the ability to breathe correctly, with grave consequences. Journalist James Nestor travels the world to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it. The answers aren’t found in pulmonology labs, as we might expect, but in the muddy digs of ancient burial sites, secret Soviet facilities, New Jersey choir schools, and the smoggy streets of São Paulo. Nestor tracks down men and women exploring the hidden science behind ancient breathing practices.

Interesting view on old insights
Revisado: 01-12-24
I liked the book, which neatly summarises a lot of different research studies and Chinese, Indian and yoga folklore. The key message is that breathing is a cure for many things and can be manipulated to improve our heath and wellbeing.
It wasn’t a page turner though and could probably have been shortened even further here and there.

The author obviously knows the CIA from the inside. And maybe this is what life in Syria really looks like. But as a book, the story was too simple and lacked surprise and excitement.

Historia
On an island off the coast of Ireland, guests gather to celebrate two people joining their lives together as one. The groom: handsome and charming, a rising television star. The bride: smart and ambitious, a magazine publisher. It’s a wedding for a magazine or for a celebrity: the designer dress, the remote location, the luxe party favors, the boutique whiskey. The cell phone service may be spotty and the waves may be rough, but every detail has been expertly planned and will be expertly executed.

Interesting plot but very, very slow
Revisado: 09-21-23
Interesting plot and setup, with some interesting underlying and relevant themes. The performances of the narrators and their different accents also made the delivery very credible.
However, the book is mostly a very long build-up to a brief ending. A lot of description of the characters and their backgrounds. And very little suspense along the way. Only in the last third of the book did it start to become more interesting.
Overall, the plot is not sufficient to make up for the lack of suspense and hence it struggled to keep my attention.
