"Fight Club" is an intriguing story with interesting characters which examines a fascinating perspective of Western male culture. I put this in the category of stories which I wouldn't say was "pleasant", but was written well enough to be worth experiencing the unpleasant grit to explore these darker areas of life and culture.

Jim Colby's narration fits the book well, but at times suffers taking the dry delivery too far. I also felt like his character delineation could have been better. Still, it was a satisfactory and enjoyable performance.

Chuck Palahniak has written a fascinating psychological drama which explores a segment of the male population through an unvarnished lens. Some men who fall outside this demographic will still relate to elements of the characters' plights, even if they disagree on their solutions.

Palahniak uses a number of mechanisms to keep the reader strategically off balance, and these work pretty well in helping you feel the chaos unfolding. One of these mechanisms is repetition, whereby the author will repeatedly call back to a scene or phrase. While often impactful, it's overused to the point of annoyance.

Overall, an enjoyable listen, some queasy topics, not for everyone, but no regrets.

David Linski's performance is excellent. He skillfully captures each characters unique personality and each is delineated well. He adds the right amount of drama so that it keeps your attention but doesn't become wearing. The story itself is a bit slow and sluggish but must be understood in context of it's time. The detail and description given by Jules Verne of the alien underwater worlds would have been the first and most vivid encounter late-19th century readers may have ever encountered. What may seem old hat to us spoiled by documentaries and pictures, would not have been to them. That said, Verne's descriptions are interwoven with exciting adventures, engaging characters, and evolving mysteries. The dramatic ending paired with Linski's performance was stunning.

Living Forward is a great book with a lot of helpful content. It really helps you think about how you can live your life more meaningfully and intentionally, and the value of creating a plan for your life. That said, the book feels like it could be more grounded. It is written by high level executives and it feels like it is written to high level executives. Practically all of the examples given in the book are from people who are in upper middle to lower upper class living conditions, and the applicability of the life plan to someone in less than ideal circumstances must be gleaned and interpreted by the reader. Very few of us understand what the luxury of taking a week off to figure out our life goals are let alone a months long sabbatical (not that they recommend this, but it's an example given in the book.) Their intentions are well, and the advice is good, but as a person struggling to make it by, in need of a life plan, much of this book felt irrelevant, especially when the authors rely heavily on firsthand accounts as examples. Drawing from personal experience is good, but too much of the book is spent on narrative and not enough on the practical aspects of how and why to make a life plan. Overall, I recommend this book, feel there are some shortcomings to it.

Living in the West we're blissfully unaware of the abject wickedness many live, eat (or don't), breathe, and die on a daily basis. Worst yet, these same ideologies and patterns are being progressively implemented and sought after with the same tin promises. This book is a humble, gut punch which our society needs.

Like many books of the era, it seems more an ode to Anglo-American exceptionalism than anything else. That said, it's an upbeat tail with some mystery. There is some suspense, but it's obvious the story wasn't intended to scare or unsettle too much. Sometimes it's just nice for things to go right. The conclusion feels a bit Deus Ex Machina and in a way cheapens the story by making this feel like a glorified closing sequence to 20,000 leagues. The voice actor was good, especially given that he was at times jumping between 6,7,or 8 voices at a time. Overall, enjoyable read.

I liked the first four books, but this full-length one was a real slog. Most of the book is spent sitting around and talking, and Ms. Wells doesn't trust her audience to infer even the most obvious conclusions. So much so that by the time anything happens, it's been analyzed to death and the reader long ago guessed what was going to happen. Murderbot is reduced to an emo-like teenager who spends most of the book bickering with ART over just about everything, which quickly loses its humor, and serves to undermine any sense of there being high stakes. If the SecUnit can invest most of his time bickering over his friendship with ART are they really in any danger? The cherry on the top is the continued and increased ham fisting of consequence-less polygamy, gender confusion, socialism, and intersectionality. I'm 8 hours in and I can't wait for it to be over. Free's performance is noticeably affected by the substandard material. Lengthy periods of "so and so said, and so and so said, and then do and so said" make the delivery stale, but I can hardly blame him.

"Exit Strategy," the concluding chapter of Martha Wells' Murderbot Diaries, delivers a satisfying resolution to the saga initiated in "All Systems Red." This installment stands out for its intensified focus on character development and a narrative brimming with suspense and action. While it diverges from the series' earlier emphasis on mystery, this shift doesn't diminish the story's intrigue. Instead, it seems Wells intentionally steers the plot towards tying up the myriad threads introduced throughout the series, aiming for a cohesive end to Murderbot's journey. Despite the slight departure from the mystery elements that enriched previous books, "Exit Strategy" captivates with its dynamic storytelling and the continued evolution of its central character. The listening experience remains enjoyable, buoyed by engaging narration that brings the characters and their world to life. Fans of the series will find this book a rewarding conclusion, echoing the satisfaction found in the series' earlier works.

"Rogue Protocol" by Martha Wells proves to be an exhilarating installment in the Murderbot Diaries series, blending humor, action, and a surprisingly profound exploration of relationships through the lens of a murder bot. This irony enriches the narrative, offering a unique perspective on the complexities of connections and self-awareness, hallmarks of thought-provoking science fiction. The story's pace surpasses its predecessors, infused with relentless action and sustained mystery that grips the reader from start to finish. While it might benefit from a more pronounced twist to elevate the suspense, the novel remains a compelling journey. Kevin R. Free's exceptional narration brings the titular character to life, enhancing the listening experience with his dynamic portrayal. Wells masterfully uses science fiction to dissect themes we might not otherwise scrutinize, making "Rogue Protocol" not just an entertaining read but a reflective probe into the essence of entity and interrelation.

Fun mystery with humor relatable to any introvert. Some of the technical details get repetitive, especially when the details have been given to us several times over. But not so much as to detract too much from the story. It is sci-fi of course. Performer has a great voice to capture the Murderbots mixture of emotions and apathy.

Good performance and fun story. Parts are a bit overly repetitive given the short nature, but there is a good story, good characters, and good mystery. It has the right amount of strangeness and suspense without being too weird.
