Historia
From trips on private jets and encounters with world leaders to shocking accounts of misogyny and double standards behind the scenes, this searing memoir exposes both the personal and the political fallout when unfettered power and a rotten company culture take hold. In a gripping and often absurd narrative where a few people carelessly hold the world in their hands, this eye-opening memoir reveals what really goes on among the global elite.

Nothing here surprised me.
Revisado: 04-17-25
This book has some bright spots, but doesn't provide anything new about Facebook that has not already been covered. The author certainly has an interesting story, and the best parts were her own personal experiences with Facebook executives. There are parts of the book that are long-winded and repetitive.
Anyone who has worked for a major corporation can certainly relate to some of the behaviors of the Facebook executives as well as the toxic environment of corporate culture. Although the author's personal experiences were interesting, I wasn't surprised by the behaviors revealed because these things happen in many workplaces across the country. It is common knowledge that those who disagree with the company's executives either keep it to themselves (to keep their job obviously) or they're fired.
If there is anything that I took away from this book, it is that you are replaceable at work and that life is too short to put that much effort into a corporation that will post your job online in less than 24 hours after you quit or get fired, so live your best life because no one will remember what you contributed to an organization 50 years in the future.

The narration is not the best, but the story itself is very good while addressing a subject that is difficult to discuss.

Didn't learn anything new
Revisado: 02-14-25
Much of what is written here is common sense if you gain enough experience in people-facing occupations. Although the narration wasn't great, it still conveyed some good strategies for dealing with difficult people such as understanding power dynamics.

Historia
Most of us have instinctive evidence the world is ending - balmy December days, face-to-face conversation replaced with heads-to-screens zomboidism, a world at constant war, a political system in disarray. We hear some myths and lies so frequently that they feel like truths: Civilization is humankind’s greatest accomplishment. Progress is undeniable. Count your blessings. You’re lucky to be alive here and now. Civilized to Death counters the idea that progress is inherently good, arguing that the "progress" defining our age is analogous to an advancing disease.

Thought provoking but has flaws
Revisado: 01-31-25
The author certainly challenges the status quo of civilization and makes some valid points. In particular the part where he discusses how quality of life and longer lifespans are not the same thing is perhaps the strongest part of the book. However, his description of foragers is very generalized.

Discusses contradictions w/ progressive ideology
Revisado: 01-16-25
The author's experience was interesting to learn about, especially when it comes to political and ideological biases in academia. There are dangers with mixing activism with science, and it was surprising how much of it is prevalent in academia. The author did a fantastic job discussing the contradictions with radical progressive ideology.

Great info but may not be relatable to everyone
Revisado: 01-09-25
There is a lot of great information about how human connection is essential for our well-being. The author commands a lot of knowledge in this area of psychology and neuroscience. She used her own personal experience to tell a story and relate her own research. However, the author's personal experience may not be relatable to everyone because most people do not come from academia or affluent backgrounds.

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Historia
In this essential new book, self-protection expert and former military intelligence officer Tim Larkin changes the way we think about violence in order to save our lives. By deconstructing our assumptions about violence - its morality, its function in modern society, how it actually works - Larkin unlocks the shackles of our own taboos and arms us with what we need to know to prevent, prepare for, and survive the unthinkable event of life-or-death violence.

Great info
Revisado: 12-11-24
There's a lot of great info here. The author has a profound understanding about the differences between social and asocial aggression. The only weak point from this book is that it seems like he is trying to promote his own business the whole time. I am skeptical about how much information can be learned and retained in a weekend seminar about self-defence, especially if there is no follow up.

Historia
Americans precede anything negative with three nice comments; French, Dutch, Israelis, and Germans get straight to the point; Latin Americans and Asians are steeped in hierarchy; Scandinavians think the best boss is just one of the crowd. It's no surprise that when they try and talk to each other, chaos breaks out. In The Culture Map, INSEAD professor Erin Meyer is your guide through this subtle, sometimes treacherous terrain in which people from starkly different backgrounds are expected to work harmoniously together.

An informative listen
Revisado: 07-14-24
Overall, I liked the content within the book. For those with a background in physiology or medicine, much of the concepts and background will seem redundant, but this would be highly recommended for anyone looking to find information that separates fact from fiction about testosterone.
