Pandora's Lab takes us from opium's heyday as the pain reliever of choice to recognition of opioids as a major cause of death in the United States; from the rise of trans fats as the golden ingredient for tastier, cheaper food to the heart disease epidemic that followed; and from the cries to ban DDT for the sake of the environment to an epidemic-level rise in world malaria.

When Doctors Mix Facts And Opinions
Revisado: 09-13-20
Over all Offit’s book makes for interesting listening, but his premise is flawed and when he gets to chapter 4, his attempt to equate Trump’s position on borders and immigration to Hitler’s final solution, he crosses the line.
By Offit’s standards we would have to include in his list of science gone wrong, the automobile, hospitals, doctors, the military, environmentalists and proponents of climate change. All are responsible for causing death and mayhem through their use of applied “science”. In every example that Offit’s brings up, it isn’t the science, but people that go wrong.
As for chapter 4, he jumps from enforcing a country’s borders and immigration laws to genocide. The reality is that if a country doesn’t have a secure border or immigration controls, it isn’t a country, it becomes a piece of land up for grabs for whoever has the resources to take it over. Is there anyone who would welcome murderers, rapists, drug peddlers and violent gangs of any color into their communities? Of course not. But to say so, by today’s woke media and politicians, makes you a racist. Which is exactly what Offit is saying and it is wrong.

Historia
In rural, impoverished Burgoyne County, New York, a pattern of strange deaths begins to emerge: Adolescent boys and girls are found murdered, their corpses left hanging in gruesome, ritualistic fashion. Senior law enforcement officials are quick to blame a serial killer, but their efforts to apprehend this criminal are peculiarly ineffective.

Historia
Psychologist and award-winning columnist Jesse Bering features more than thirty of his most popular essays from Scientific American and Slate, as well as two new pieces, that take listeners on a bold and captivating journey through some of the most taboo issues related to evolution and human behavior. Exploring the history of cannibalism, the neurology of people who are sexually attracted to animals, the evolution of human body fluids, the science of homosexuality, and serious questions about life and death, Bering astutely covers a generous expanse of our kaleidoscope of quirks and origins.

Interesting
Revisado: 09-10-12
Would you try another book from Jesse Bering and/or Jesse Bering?
No.
Would you be willing to try another book from Jesse Bering? Why or why not?
Although interesting in the beginning chapters, the author descends to subjects that didn't have any appeal to me.
What does Jesse Bering bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I think the fact that the author reads his own words helped to understand where he was coming from. This also had a negative effect towards the end of the read.
Do you think Why Is the Penis Shaped Like That? needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
Not for me.

Historia
In Savages, Don Winslow introduced Ben and Chon, twentysomething best friends who risk everything to save the girl they both love, O. Now, in his high-octane prequel, Winslow reaches back in time to tell the story of how Ben, Chon, and O became the people they are. Spanning from 1960s Southern California to the recent past, it is a tale of family in all its forms. As the younger generation does battle with drug dealers and crooked cops, they learn that their future is inextricably linked with their parents' history.

Not a waste of time
Revisado: 09-10-12
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The author tries way too hard to be "cool". Not a bad read once you get over his too cool language.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Favorite Character is Chon. He's a do-er more than a talker.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
The performance was just OK. It didn't seem to fit with the too cool language.
Did The Kings of Cool inspire you to do anything?
Not really.
Any additional comments?
I think the movie will be better than the book.

The Way Hollywood Tells It

Historia
David Bordwell argues that the principles of visual storytelling created in the studio era are alive and well, even in today's bloated blockbusters. American filmmakers have created a durable tradition - one that we should not be ashamed to call artistic, and one that survives in both mainstream entertainment and niche-marketed indie cinema. Bordwell traces the continuity of this tradition in a wide array of films made since 1960.

Typical academic's view
Revisado: 09-26-10
I pity the student that has to sit through Mr, Bordwell's ramblings. His thoughts and ideas are typical of how an academic thinks the creative process can be understood by using his analytical powers. A non-creative person's take on how the creative process works.
