I've been revisiting Stephen King's books as an adult since I haven't read some of the older ones since they first came out when I was in high school. This book was always one that I had loved reading. The reason I purchased this book though was because of the narrator James Franco (who in my opinion can do no wrong). I found him a perfect fit for the task of bringing this novel to audio. I've enjoyed Frank Muller a lot and is one of my favorite King narrators. Steven Weber wasn't too bad in "It", but James Franco really brought me a new appreciation of this novel. I found myself thoroughly engrossed and could not put it down till I had finished. Listen to the sample and if you enjoy Franco's voice then you really should check this audiobook out. It's not King's best work, but definitely one of the better ones.

I saw this in anticipation of the movie. I don't know how the movie was done but the book is compelling. What is scary is that this book was written in 2013 and is a predicator of what we are doing today technologically. This is not taking place in the future but rather in today's world. The pressure that many feel with having their activity dictated by "smiles" and "frowns" is examined and frightfully draws many comparisons with how life is today. Becoming more and more reliant on computers, the internet, and outside validation for day-to-day life, the characters in this book are very much reflecting today's American society. Are we headed toward a totalitarian society or do we stop the laziness and and change? These are questions that are dealt with in an interesting book. I thought the performance was good, and even though the main character is a woman, the narrator does a fine job. I'd recommend listening to this for the nuances and commentary by the author on issues that we are dealing with today. Well worth the credit and time.

What did you like best about New York 2140? What did you like least?

I did like the many characters each being read by a different narrator. The least: the rest of the book.

What was most disappointing about Kim Stanley Robinson’s story?

The author needs to decide on a genre and stick with it. Was this current social commentary, a predicator for the future, a mystery? At times is seemed to resonate with the agenda of the computer hacker group Anonymous.

Have you listened to any of the narrators’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Some of the narrators were a disaster, and listening to each of their sections was painful. The majority of the narrators did an adept job with the weak material

Could you see New York 2140 being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

NO... Please just no.

Any additional comments?

I gave this a good shot and listened to about 16 hours, the last 3 only semi conscious. I will hopefully still be able to return. Spare yourself a credit and some time.

What made the experience of listening to 4 3 2 1 the most enjoyable?

I really like the fact that it was read by the author, so that I was able to hear the cadence in which it was meant to be heard.

What other book might you compare 4 3 2 1 to and why?

I would compare this book to City on Fire and A Little Lie both of which I would really recommend.

What about Paul Auster’s performance did you like?

I actually loved the performance but I did speed it up to 1.25x which resulted in a slight octave raise to the narrators voice. This made it a little easier to relate to him being a young man. He also did not attempt to fein female voices.

Any additional comments?

If you are to purchase this novel, be ready for the long haul. I listened to this over a period of 3 days and couldn't put it down. This was my first Paul Auster book and I definitely don't think it will be my last.

I got through half the book before I got new information on this subject. A lot of it has already been depicted in the movie (mentioned also in this book) "We are Legion". It was nice to have that reference to look back on when listening to the details of what transpired in the early days of Anonymous. I highly suggest that the prospective listener samples the audio performance before committing to this audiobook. The narrator has received a lot of bad reviews on her previous performances. I didn't mind her too much, but was ready for the novel to be over with. The author is sympathetic to the cause to a certain extent, so if you do not want to hear this group being accolated then steer away. This book though new on audible, is an older book. Otherwise it was very interesting. I'm glad I spent the credit but could see how others may not be too thrilled.

Definitely a book for kids. It wasn't until after I got the book that I saw that the target audience was 11-13. Just not for adults. Sorry.

It's Kathy Griffin... It's not Tolstoy or Dickens, it's celebrity gossip and it's fun! Definitely prefer the audiobook over the print for one reason... Kathy Griffin. I have not read her precious book but this one was enough for me. Just hysterical!

I figure I'm around the same age as the author judging from the timeline of this novel. Spanning from the 1980's through today and beyond, I identified with a number of the characters and situations that they went through. Drug addiction, living through the early years of HIV/AIDS Activism, dealing with adoption, these are just a few of the topics dealt with in a very honest, and sometimes brutal, way. Tim Murphy is a gifted writer and deftly jumps back and forth through time, weaving and incredible tale of love, loneliness, addiction and recovery, and basic human desires. I listened to this in about 3 sittings, only stopping to sleep. I was fully immersed in this somewhat tragic yet vivid novel. I Highly recommend this novel, well worth the credit.

I just fell in love with the characters. The narration was beyond incredible. All narrators brought their A game when performing. Most I have heard before from other books, they each brought to life the intricate nuances of each character. Wow... just WOW. I didn't want it to end.

I personally loved this book. I like the PDF files that came along with it too. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone who isn't familiar with Twin Peaks. I suggest you go to Netfilx and binge watch before the Showtime upcoming series or partaking in this book. It was great to get the inside histories for some of my favorite characters ever on television. A pretty easy going listen. I'm glad I spent the credit.

I've been reading Carl Hiaasen since I was in high school reading his Miami Herald columns. So this book was a lot of fun for me since it takes place in my neck of the woods. Right off the top of the book I knew I was in for a fun, but twisted ride. If you aren't interested after the first chapter, then I'd recommend that you return the book right away. I really enjoyed it. The sardonic wit followed with some really interesting, but as a south Floridian I can attest to, very relatable characters. The plot is mysterious enough to call it a mystery/thriller but there is a lot of humor thrown in.
