Wasn't expecting the evangelism
Revisado: 03-21-23
This might have been a great story, but the evangelical Christianity is spread pretty thick. I gave up about 2 hours in.

Molly Gray is not like everyone else. She struggles with social skills and misreads the intentions of others. Her gran used to interpret the world for her, codifying it into simple rules that Molly could live by. Since Gran died a few months ago, twenty-five-year-old Molly has been navigating life’s complexities all by herself. No matter—she throws herself with gusto into her work as a hotel maid. Her unique character, along with her obsessive love of cleaning and proper etiquette, make her an ideal fit for the job.

Charming
Revisado: 01-05-23
this was a very sweet book about a young woman who is not neurotypical. I found the mystery very charming and I enjoyed the book very much. however, I worry about being a consumer of material that is clearly about amusing neurotypical people with the difficulties a neurodiverse person may experience.

Narrator was AWFUL.
Revisado: 12-13-22
Narrator could not keep consistent accents and the performance was so overwrought, it seemed borderline hysterical.

Historia
Laurel Snow wouldn't call hunting a serial killer a vacation, but with a pile of dead bodies unearthed near her Genesis Valley, Washington, hometown, she'll take what she can get. Yet something about this case stirs her in unexpected ways. Like the startling connection she feels to Dr. Abigail Caine, a fiercely intelligent witness with a disturbing knack for making Laurel feel like she has something on her. Then there's Laurel's attraction to Huck Rivers, the fish and wildlife officer guiding her to the crime scene - and into the wilderness....

For Megan, keeping her boy safe and happy is what matters. But Woody believes a monstrous evil was behind his father’s death and now threatens him and his mother. And he’s not alone in his thoughts. An ally unknown to him is listening.

Fizzles out at the end....
Revisado: 04-12-20
Koontz has always been a little formulaic (his male heros are practically always ex-military, and always, always always straight). This was like a bunch of his other books (Lightning, Watchers), but with a less satisfying ending. It went on a little too long, and was kind of Grisham-esque in how it ended.
Additionally, he's so painfully ableist... The non-verbal autistic kid is "healed" and can speak now? C'mon. And also the weird swipe at the trans community - ugh. Dude. I know you're Catholic, but maybe come into the current millenium.

Historia
One person talks; the other listens. It's so basic that we take it for granted. Unfortunately, most of us think of ourselves as better listeners than we actually are. Why do we so often fail to connect when speaking with family members, romantic partners, colleagues, or friends? How do emotional reactions get in the way of real communication? This thoughtful, witty, and empathic book has already helped over 100,000 people break through conflicts and transform their personal and professional relationships.

Deep Dive into Communication within Relationships
Revisado: 02-05-20
This book is a deep dive - there's no "quick start guide" or "just three little rules to success!" This a deeply psychodynamic approach to communication within relationships. It's also largely about close relationships, including friendships, families, and intimate partners, rather than professional relationships or workplaces.
The narrator has a distinctly Paul Harvey like cadence and voice, which gave this book an artificially dated feel. I felt like I was listening to something that had been written in the 1970's, even though it was updated in 2009. I would have preferred a different narrator because of the cognitive dissonance.
It's a worthwhile book. It's also very clearly written by an educated white guy for white people. There's no attention given to the way that different cultures and ethnicities communicate, or to the way that people often need to code-switch to succeed in some settings.

Meh. Good - but not really crucial
Revisado: 01-21-20
I love Kim Stone - I LOVE her. This was, however, kinda meh. I had hoped to get some more back story about her, but there's actually more of that in the rest of the series.
It's fine. It's not fantastic.

Somewhat dated - but interesting
Revisado: 01-19-20
Though I can't really say that I have more persuasion skills now than I had before I read this, it was an interesting read (listen).
I also think this is a little more geared toward sales/marketing than just every day life or normal work life.

Generally Good.... except
Revisado: 12-21-19
It would be lovely to live in a world where there wasn't actual danger in assuming that other people are harboring only the very best of intentions. Unfortunately, we do not live in that world. Especially as women, assuming that people are good and honorable and trustworthy is a really poor idea, depending on the circumstances.
This is a "nice" book - it would be great if just genuinely being this nice and positive and well-meaning could be as beneficial and SAFE as it seems to have been for Mr. Carnegie. I will certainly use these techniques in situations where there's no observable reason NOT to, but they're simply not applicable across the board. Also, I have concerns about how this could easily make women look like doormats and also incredibly naive.
There are some great things to note about this version (I want to go back and read the original now), especially the points about how anything you say on the internet can live forever, and in this way, we need to be more intentional and careful with our words than previous generations.
So go ahead and read this - and then apply judiciously. Especially if you're a woman.

How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.

Okay, but now what?
Revisado: 12-06-19
This was fascinating, and I will no doubt be thinking and talking about this for weeks - but now what?
Now that we know that we aren't good lie detectors, that we misinterpret intent and meaning, and we're terrible guessers about intention and honesty... now what?
I hope there's some sort of sequel or companion that has more insight into the "Okay, now what?"
Fascinating. Seriously - so much interesting information.
