Don’t waste your credits on this. Was so excited to see a Woodiwiss novel on Audible and really looked forward to revisiting some old favorites I had read in print, but…so disappointed. THE ABRIDGED STORY IS A RIP OFF. The story is gone, gutted, to the point you can’t cheer for or like any one character. “Bad guys” don’t inspire dread or fear. Can’t understand why the H/h are together. Frankly…boring. Any abridged version should be clearly marked as such!!! It’s a rip off.

Nice H/h and decent premise, but very slow storyline where I just wanted it over. Listening became a chore. Secondary characters were either not appealing, or downright unlikeable. Can finish a good book in a day, but unable to get through this over three days. Fell asleep more than once.. Don’t care enough about this H/h’s story to rewind and find out their ending, who the ‘bad guys are, etc. Not finishing. Narrator was good but for the poorly done American accent of a secondary character.

Couldn’t make it much past Chapter 2, and should have read more of the reviews. Antony Ferguson does struggle a bit with female voices, yet has been a favorite. Surprised that I disliked him so in this, but he narrated BOTH the H/h as if they have an intellectual difficulty in this book. As for the story, there is the fact that the h is literally and fully suicidal. NOT in a “moment of despair, youthful fit of pity led to a low moment and passing suicidal thought, but I’m strong enough to pull myself up by my bootstraps” manner. Actual planned out suicide where she is angry at being thwarted. In a historical romance?! Yuck.
As for the H. Not an alpha male by any means. He is narrated as low energy, very low confidence, and perhaps less than average intelligence for what he should have demonstrated per his 28 years of age and supposed training and skills. More like a sheltered and introverted teen, without the energy, drive, etc of a teen. Was that on purpose? I haven’t read the first book, but wonder if he was written as such for storyline purposes in that other book. You know, the damaged, pitiful, foolish or dimwit brother? Bottom of the genetic barrel compared to siblings? Almost every introspective thought expressed suggests that is who he believes he is. NOT A RELAXING, FEEL GOOD ESCAPE. Yikes. If you are seeking an alpha male H or are triggered by suicide, avoid this one.

I tried for well over a week to like this story. I really did. Premise was good. Main characters were good people, in spite of the H’s behavior in the very beginning. The narrator was EXCELLENT. He did a great job with what he was given, and I hung in there longer bc of the quality of narration. But the “story” felt more like a description of events and actions with no real emotional connection to the characters. I was not “there” and never got lost in the story or characters. In fact, the author did not make me care about any of them. She wrote of very nice people, often doing kind things, which I appreciated, but they seemed flat and without humor or depth. It was so boring! Not returning bc I did hang in there thru chapter 23 or so, but not finishing. Maybe this was her first effort? Wasted credit.

So wanted to hear this story! Shocked to hear it narrated in an unappealing flat, very modern American accent, as if it were a contemporary whodunnit. Really? Flat mid-America voice for a tale set in 9th century Anglo-Saxon England? WTH?! So much incongruity that it was impossible to get lost in the period. Adding insult to injury, the narrator tries to speak with a Baltic accent! Laughed out loud when he - as the H - acknowledged his low “gravelly voice” and “scary” accent in a manner that was anything but. So very painful. I swear I caught a wisp of a French accented syllable here and there! It got worse when he tried to use a Baltic accent with a different voice for a second character. Narrator couldn’t handle one properly, much less two. Seriously, was this narrative choice a result of nepotism? Or blackmail? Very disappointed, but must return the audiobook. I really like the premise, so considering buying a hard copy. Perhaps I will find time to actually sit down and read.

Really enjoyed this selection and plan to go back for the rest of the series. Well-rounded characters were appealing enough to keep me engaged and pleasantly lost in the story. Great narration. Worth a credit!

Enjoyed the previous book in the series. This one was a huge letdown, with ridiculous use of a silly current world mindset into the Regency period. The story was promising to start, but then bits of incongruous social mores began to yank me out of the story. Began to think that it may have been a well-intentioned, but poorly executed re-write to soothe the perpetually offended, like we’ve seen happen with some other novels from the last decade.
Each time I got yanked out and thought, “Well, that doesn’t fit the time period!”, I did my best to jump back into the story. It got harder each time the H/H said or did something that was right out of the current day. Problem enough that Charlie is manipulative and continually makes bad decisions! I swear, if WAP had been out in her day, she would have been singing it full-throated at a musicale before regretting her uncontrollable impulse. Then she would be portrayed as the victim by the author due to society’s negative reaction! That aside, the “big love scene” was the final straw, where my tolerance for nonsense was gone. Here they are, finally about to have intercourse, with him having been the holdout. Too much dialogue, full of the Duke’s “Do you want me to stop?” “I’d like to touch you there, if you want me to.” “You must tell me what you want.” “Can I touch you (name body part)?” None of this In a sexy, teasing, delaying gratification manner. It was a groveling, emasculated, 21st century “men must be ashamed and atone for any sexual appetite” kind of way. A repeated, mood-killing “can I” question from the man and a “yes, please do!” response from the woman. Before. Every. Touch. By the third or so “Do you want me to stop?” I was done! This ridiculously insecure quest for step-by-step affirmation was just…silly. Keep in mind that in the previous days she had gone down on him in a carriage to its full conclusion, talked about pleasuring herself, and had been trying to manipulate him into a sexual relationship all along! So now, after he finally agrees to have sex with her, she admits to him that she is wanton and not actually a virgin. She then spills the beans on that other sexual encounter in the hayloft with a neighbor, after “too much cider”, with details right down to the messy ending on her skirts! Because he’s about to find out anyway, right? He didn’t bat an eye, being the most patient, woman-affirming and understanding Duke in the 1800s. Or any century. Instead of being freed from restraint by weeks of her “I want you to (insert your own term here) me!” behavior and talk, he continues to behave like a supplicant. Again, not in a sexy way, but in an emasculated and unappealing way. As for Charlie, she is foolish at every chapter. By her own admissions she is also untalented, unaccomplished, self-indulgent and “wanton”. Who would enjoy this heroine, but for someone just like her? Makes me wonder who this author wrote for.
The narration was well done. Yes, she spoke slowly and I checked several times to make sure I hadn’t accidentally toggled to a lower speed. But it wasn’t unpleasant, unlike the story, Charlie, and eventually the Duke.
Just over 2 hours left and I won’t finish.

First chapter or two was great, but it went downhill fast. The curse premise was interesting, and I felt the author communicated a sense of “magical” chemistry between the H and h when the met. Individually, the characters were dull. On Catherine’s part, too much internal dialogue and a tedious “am I crazy?” angst. I stuck with the story a bit, even after she mysteriously started speaking Gaelic and didn’t know she was doing so. (As a Harry Potter fan, I’m rather offended at thatripoff.). would be so offended at that ripoff!). itAfter several hours I don’t give a fig about ANY of the characters, there is no development to the story, and I won’t finish. So glad I didn’t have to use a credit for this. On a positive note, the narrator was quite good.

Stop using Antony Ferguson. Unbearable. The listener spends so much time trying to interpret the odd cadence and weird pauses that you miss the sentence itself. Also lacks the talent to do women’s voices. Would have liked to have heard this story, but not worth the aggravation.

Just no. Narrator is good, but the “hero” is written as an unintelligent and unappealing buffoon. As an included title where no credit was required, it is still not worth your time.
