Historia
Benny Griessel and Vaughn Cupido are languishing in Stellenbosch. Run-of-the-mill police work in the leafy university town is a far cry from their previous life in the elite HAWKS. Real characters, deftly crafted around a story line that is so scarily credible that you expect to read the next revelations in tomorrow’s news report. I guess that is why some key names had to be changed to protect the guilty!

Historia
If, like Kane, you're a Denied Access Area spy for the CIA, then boundaries have no meaning. Your function is to go in, do whatever is required, and get out again - by whatever means necessary. You know when to run, when to hide - and when to shoot. But some places don't play by the rules. Some places are too dangerous, even for a man of Kane's experience. The badlands where the borders of Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan meet are such a place - a place where violence is the only way to survive.

Unexpected Science Fiction story - good but not great.
Revisado: 03-24-24
After “I am Pilgrim” we waited excitedly for his next book. We expected to be mesmerised by this long awaited second book. Maybe had we known that it was a science fiction book earlier on we would have ‘suspended belief’ earlier on and would not have been as thrown by the numerous obvious impossibilities and errors that we encountered. As long as you realise that there are many such impossibilities-(and we are not talking of spores from another planet here which we realise is futuristic and “who knows what the future holds anyway” ) it is an absorbing listen - and kept us needing to know how it ended!

Historia
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

An evocative story, improved by author's reading.

We really enjoyed this book. Lots to learn about India, and about the caste system, as well as about medicine, and leprosy. Really found the book totally absorbing. We grew to love the reading by the author which added an extra dimension to the story. LOVED IT!

This is the tale of Demon Copperhead: our hero. A boy with no assets beyond his dead father's good looks and copper-coloured hair, bucket-loads of charm and a talent or two the world is yet to discover. Born to a teenaged single mother in a single wide trailer, life is not set fair for Demon as he escorts us on this, his journey through the modern perils of foster care, athletic success and addiction, the dizzying highs of true love, and the crushing losses that can accompany it.

Living outside the USA, and in a small relatively privileged village, but with a son and his family living in Virginia, it was hard to listen to this story. But we are so glad we did. Excellent in every respect.

London, 1988. Royal fever sweeps the nation as Britain falls in love with the ‘people’s princess’. Which means for Scotland Yard, the focus is on the elite Royalty Protection Command, and its commanding officer. Entrusted with protecting the most famous family on earth, they quite simply have to be the best. A weak link could spell disaster.

Great Story, Greater Performance, Simple Errors
Revisado: 01-20-23
As with JA's other books, he really does have the gift of telling a great story, and we (my wife and I) were absorbed in the story and the characters. What a pity that, even with 18 rewrites, he (and his Editor) allows simple, silly (and unbelievable) errors to creep in to the story. In his last book we recommended he employ a (better?) consultant on legal issues, and after listening to this book, he clearly needs a (better?) aviation consultant, and a (better) military/naval consultant. If one gets over those silly (and far fetched) issues - and we did - the listen was great, not least because of an excellent narrator!

A good story that will ensure we listen to the next one in the series. However while the consultants on the policing side have done a good job, again this cannot be said of the legal side. We really appreciated the skills of the reader!

Historia
Marie Laure lives with her father in Paris within walking distance of the Museum of Natural History where he works as the master of the locks (there are thousands of locks in the museum). When she is six, she goes blind, and her father builds her a model of their neighbourhood, every house, every manhole, so she can memorise it with her fingers and navigate the real streets with her feet and cane. When the Germans occupy Paris, father and daughter flee to Saint-Malo on the Brittany coast, where Marie-Laure's agoraphobic great uncle lives in a tall, narrow house by the sea wall.

An absorbing and illuminating listen about an era that I thought I knew it all, and a sub plot (blindness) about which I knew very little! The insight provided by seeing the situation from both sides of the war was also an added valuable perspective. What an interesting book in so many ways, expertly narrated!

Revisado: 07-09-22
We chose to listen to this book because we were looking for another performance by Cassandra Campbell- who did not disappoint! Beautifully read! We are so glad we did! We knew little about Jefferson or the times and conditions in which he lived, and came away with a good appreciation of many facets of an important time in history. The authors’ notes at end were particularly illuminating. A worthwhile “read” thoroughly enjoyed.
