Historia
Splatter Capital shows how a subgenre of cinematic horror has developed a unique perspective on the cycles of capitalism. It argues that the messy brand of horror mobilized in gore or "splatter" films is extremely responsive to the internal contradictions that threaten the future sustainability of capitalist accumulation. And, while responding to the prospect of that end, splatter promotes an extant truth: capitalist accumulation is and always has been a nightmare of systematized bloodshed.

Historia
Piranesi lives in the House. Perhaps he always has. In his notebooks, day after day, he makes a clear and careful record of its wonders: the labyrinth of halls, the thousands upon thousands of statues, the tides that thunder up staircases, the clouds that move in slow procession through the upper halls. On Tuesdays and Fridays Piranesi sees his friend, the Other. At other times he brings tributes of food to the Dead. But mostly, he is alone.

Historia
What exactly are the weird and the eerie? In this new essay, Mark Fisher argues that some of the most haunting and anomalous fiction of the 20th century belongs to these two modes. The weird and the eerie are closely related but distinct modes, each possessing its own distinct properties. Both have often been associated with horror, yet this emphasis overlooks the aching fascination that such texts can exercise. The weird and the eerie both fundamentally concern the outside and the unknown, which are not intrinsically horrifying, even if they are always unsettling.

I already had the book and was excited to see it on audible. hopefully they bring all of the late Mark Fisher’s books to audible, soon. His views on music, movies, literature are very interesting and deserve a read or listen.

Many of literature's greatest works, from ancient myths to the works of Nobel laureates, rely on fantasy. Even when there has been a dominant preference for realism, generation after generation of readers have been drawn to stories of the fantastic-not only for what they help us learn about ourselves as individuals or as members of society, but also for what they show about our social values.

If nothing else, it will help you rethink some of the incredible works of art we take from granted.
I especially loved the section on Walter Miller’s Canticle for Liebowitz.

Bestselling author, speaker, and world-traveling success coach Jen Sincero cuts through the din of the self-help genre with her own verbal meat cleaver in You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life. In this refreshingly blunt how-to guide, Sincero serves up 27 bite-sized chapters full of hilariously inspiring stories, life-changing insights, easy exercises, and the occasional swear word.

Inspiring Coach
Revisado: 01-05-15
Like all books of this genre, they are meant to inspire you to be a virtuous creative person in charge of your life. This one is direct and the author is intelligent with many anecdotes from her life and world history. I don't think she had a Steve Jobs reference which I appreciated as I am tired of Jobs being the example in these books, there are more interesting people out there.
The author is funny and a good narrator.

Historia
Phil Klay's Redeployment takes listeners to the frontlines of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, asking us to understand what happened there, and what happened to the soldiers who returned. Interwoven with themes of brutality and faith, guilt and fear, helplessness and survival, the characters in these stories struggle to make meaning out of chaos. Redeployment has become a classic in the tradition of war writing. Across nations and continents, Klay sets in devastating relief the two worlds a soldier inhabits: One of extremes and one of loss.

Disturbing and educational
Revisado: 01-04-15
I was in the public library the other day and in the "quick reads" display there was a row of romance novels with pictures of male torsos and stories about tormented Navy SEALs and the women who love them. Under that shelf was a row of books with men in military garb with titles like "SEAL team 6: Under fire!". Under that shelf...yup...zombies and I'll stop there. I'm not against military fantasy but it's good to have some exposure to experiences closer to the reality of war and this group of stories delivers on that.
This is not an easy read, the stories are tough to read and there are some really disturbing moments. Some of the POV characters are not very likable and I appreciate that Klay is not trying to manipulate readers into liking all of these guys because it's not about that. It's really about getting a glimpse of what is going on in these people's lives who are sent to war.
I appreciated the soldier reaction to dealing with the mythos of soldiering including civilian preoccupation with all soldiers having PTSD, the sex appeal of men in uniform, and Americans thanking soldiers for their service whenever they see them in uniform.
The Foreign Service Officer story is my favorite as I was interested in joining the Foreign Service a few years ago. Hilarious and absurd. The supporting characters in this story are particularly entertaining; the jaded professor-translator, the hyper-positive assistant trying to make the world a better place, the major who competently plays the political game, and the consultant with the practical advice. All the supporting characters wiser than the protagonist who is in charge of the operation. This story would make a great book.
The only issue I had...not crazy about the narrator, the POV characters are different from each other in spirit and experience; he didn't always capture that. I still gave a high overall score because I could live with it.

Historia
Carl Mørck used to be one of Denmark’s best homicide detectives. Then a hail of bullets destroyed the lives of two fellow cops, and Carl - who didn’t draw his weapon - blames himself. So a promotion is the last thing he expects. But Department Q is a department of one, and Carl’s got only a stack of cold cases for company. His colleagues snicker, but Carl may have the last laugh, because one file keeps nagging at him: A liberal politician vanished five years earlier and is presumed dead. But she isn’t dead...yet.

Carl MØrck is one of my favorites!
Revisado: 01-04-15
What I love about this book is, first and foremost, the characters. Carl's inner voice is fantastic! He's funny and poignant. Assad is also wonderful and even the supporting characters with small roles; the psychiatrist, Vera, Carl's boss are all wonderful. What makes this different from Dragon Tattoo and Erlandur is that it has a sense of humor, a great sense of humor.
The plot is dark and the villain is horrible.
I really enjoyed the narration and highly recommend.

Existential crisis followed by a journey
Revisado: 01-03-15
What really stands out abot this book is how accelerated the main character is. Unfortunately, that drives her into a very early mid-life or existential crisis which she handles by upending her life which is exactly what she needs to do. So we travel with through this confusing, depressing, empowering, and joyful time.
Very intelligent book with important insights particularly for women. A lot of reviewers are very critical of this book due to the fact that she is so successful and decides to give up on a brand of success not many people get, Finding meaning in your life, though, is not a superfluous need but a very important one.

Chief Inspector Van Veeteren knew that murder cases were never as open-and-shut as this one: Janek Mitter woke one morning with a brutal hangover and discovered his wife of three months lying facedown in the bathtub, dead. With only the flimsiest excuse as his defense, he is found guilty of a drunken crime of passion and imprisoned in a mental institution.

Had issues with the main character
Revisado: 01-03-15
Scandinavian thrillers have a strong dependency on the main character. There's Carl Morck, Lisbeth Salander, and Erlandur who are my favorites. The main detective in mind's eye just wasn't interesting or believable. At one point he makes a bet that he'll solve the case or quit and go on vacation and I just didn't care. Perhaps the books get better as you progress...

Loved the first two books, not happy with this one
Revisado: 01-03-15
This is not a bad book but i simply didn't like where the plot went. It felt like getting on a train you thought was heading south and then you find yourself at the north pole with your scuba gear. I can't explain further without spoilers.
Characters were excellent but no real growth fom the first two novels. I'm going to go back and review the first two books which I really enjoyed.
narrator, Simon Vance, terrific as is usual.
