Not going to mince words here, this is a very good book/story. I'm no professional book critic by any means, but I know a good story when I hear it, and this is one of them! It's somewhat similar to that movie with Dustin Hoffman in it, but this plague goes much farther, and more intricate than that movie. What happens in this book could very well happen here in the United States, all it takes is one little mistake...............................

The Smell of Stale Whiskey, and Unwashed Bodies?

I thoroughly enjoyed all four books in this series, and found them well written, and entertaining. However, I did not like the constant "indirect references" to how bad drinking, and smoking was, and how everyone should drink coffee. I felt that this was not the time or place for "PC" references like that. After all, these stories were time situated in the 1800's, and people smoked, drank, and chewed tobacco back then, and still do, and there weren't many places to take a bath in those days, unless you wanted to jump into a cold river or creek to wash up. Indoor plumbing had not been invented yet. I also thought the author went a "bit" overboard on the "love scenes" between Buck & Rebecca, and Cody & Julianna.
Also, the author brings a whole new meaning to the word "fiction" in these books, the main characters could do no wrong, they were constantly falling into situations that caused them to make zillions of dollars, ..........I wish I could fall into just one of those situations these days! These are good books, and if you like westerns you will enjoy them, just a bit to much on the romantic side for me. I do hope the author intends to continue the series!

Not much to say, but I do have another book by this author "An Unfinished Life", which I will say is way more Western than this book is, and is very good btw. This is a good book also, but is very far from being a Western, it is about people, and their everyday lives. Yes, there is some talk, and experiences about horses in it. Don't let the mediocre rating diswade you from experiencing this book, I did enjoy it, it just wasn't what I expected from this author.

Although I like McMurtry's books, this one just seemed to take the cake when I finished it tonight. It seems to me that Larry loves to introduce his characters into his stories, gets you to love them or hate them, and then kills them off slowly! I think he just likes to play with his "readers-listeners" emotions, similarly to some of his characters "killings". Why else would all the main characters be gone now, in the Lonesome Dove saga's, well......almost gone, only one's left are P-i, Lorena, and barely by a whisker, Call.

MUCH BETTER THAN THE MOVIE

I disliked the movie so much, that I never even thought about the book for quite sometime. Though as usual, once I checked the book out, I found that it was extremely interesting, and again, as usual, the movie couldn't hold a candle to the book! If you liked "Lonesome Dove", you'll love this book, as it is yet another saga in the series of Gus & Captain Call that preceeds Lonesome Dove. It gives the full background on "Blue Duck", the loathsome character who stole Lorena, and abused her severely in Lonesome Dove.

The Magician Weaves His Magic Again.

As a L'Amour die-hard I had my doubts about purchasing this book, but my fears were soon alleviated as Louis wove his magic at intertwining the past with the present. Although not a western, this book has much about the Souix Indians, adventure, living off the land in extreme conditions, as the main character Joe Mack treks through Siberia, to escape the Russian military and KGB. No one but Louis L'Amour could write this book, and as usual very good narration by David Stratharin. As said by in a reveiw by another Audible listener this book ends as if there is to be a sequel, I wait "impatiently" for that sequel!

This review is for Parts 1&2. If you love "true" stories of Mountain Men in the late 1700's early 1800's you'll love this book. Very informative, and entertaining. Jim Bridger, Kit Carson, Jeb Smith, Lewis & Clark, there all in here, and more! Loads of stories about Native Americans, Mountain Man Rondevous, hard times, good times, etc.. I also really liked the "narrator", he reminded me of the person who narrated the Walt Disney "animal" movies, for those of you who can remember, he was an absolute joy to listen to, and had me laughing out loud at times. If we could get history teachers to "teach" history the way this guy narrates, all our students would get an A+ in history. This book is worth every penny!

This has got to be the most boring book I have purchased. Being a "big" listener of books about the North, and cold areas of the world, and listening to a sample of this book I thought it would be such, but it was not. In fact, after listening to this book I'm not real sure what it was about. There was much talk about the female anatomy, and how bad women are treated, but it seemed to me this author never really got to the point he/she was trying to make. There were some sections that held my attention/anticipation, but very few. I'm thinking maybe this story had something to do with global warming and the after effects of it, but don't hold me to that, because frankly I'm not sure about that either. The story dwelled on her face being scarred with acid, her father-dieing, her years in concentration camps, trying to kill herself, deserted cities/towns, radiation, etc., this book was all over the place. Wish I could get a refund. My opinion,......don't waste your money on this book.

Unfortunately I have lived this book.

I live in Wyoming. I definately feel a "kinship" with the main character in this story. Sadness prevails here where I live alone, because I lost my son also, August 2008.
Although the movie is very good, played by my favorite movie actors Redford & Freeman, I feel the book is much better, and I wish the movie had stayed closer to the way the book was written.
I hope no one ever has to go through the loss of their child. As was said in the movie, "We (parents), are not supposed to outlive our children".
To bad I don't have someone like Morgan Freeman to lean on. You will enjoy this book.

As with most people living out west such as I do (Wyoming), you've probably watched the movie at least 10 times. Take my word for it if you like westerns (Oaters' as they call 'em), you will love this book. The narrator did not do Gus' part very well but the rest was very good. It is to bad they couldn't make the movie 36 hours long! Do not let the time on this book daunt you in any way, because once you start listening you will not want to shut it off.
