Two things...

First, this book is a tragedy, I know it says action adventure, but don't be fooled.

Second, Kylar is going to disappoint you throughout the entire book, especially if you read the original trilogy. Kylar is barely recognizable to me, but it has been awhile since I read the original three books.

Good overall but a few issues.

Just a few hangups that might bother some people. I'll probably continue with the series... I'm three books in, and I need to vent. I'll try to keep spoilers to a minimum, but stop here if you don't want anything given away.

First off, Op Sec is a mess. Halfdan, for example, is well known among the ghost circles despite the fact that each ghost should only know 2 other ghosts in their circle. The exception is circle masters who know everyone in the circle. Halfdan knows multiple circle masters and several operatives... Why then is Halfdan allowed to work as a field operative, the possibility of him being captured is a MASSIVE security risk.

Second, Cayna is supposed to be smart and observant. When a thrown dagger is deflected by a magus and the magus then tells her he's warded himself against steel weapon. Cayna should not respond with sneaking up behind him and attempting to stab him in the back with a steel dagger less than 2 minutes later.

Lastly, if you know you're going to be fighting someone with steel deflection, come up with a counter measure beforehand. There are other metals that hold an edge other than Iron and Iron alloys. Hell make a stone knife if that's what it takes.

Very meh... mild spoilers ahead

I Can't really get behind Griff. He has a bit of a cocky/bratty attitude that makes me wish I could punch him more often than not. The "school bully" isn't much of a bully he just spouts some elitist BS most of the time and walks off. Griff and his friends do worse things to said "bully" and it kinda makes me wonder who is suppose to be the bad guy in the story. Further more, Griff seems to be a bit of a mary sue, no real mistakes made or lessons learned on his part that jump to mind. That said I do get a chuckle here and there and I do enjoy power fantasy stories once in awhile.

Interesting Characters and a good amount of twists

I like a book that keeps me guessing, this book achieved that. Characters felt like the had depth rather than one emotion that defines them. This book is more intrigue oriented than action oriented. You action junkies have been warned.

Summary as a little vague, but not a bad story

* Jeff Hays does a great job as usual.
* I did enjoy this book even though it took a few chapters to get going.
* Not all characters are developed equally but I felt they were unique enough to pass muster.
* Action is sprinkled about at regular intervals.
* The main character has a pretty insane power but is more or less balanced out by the fact that he's nearly useless on is own.
* I think it is safe to assume there will be a sequel since a good deal of questions remain unanswered at the end.
