A very good listen. Well drawn characters and an interesting premise. I’m not sure it’s entirely plausible, however. This is one I’ll discuss with my husband…the lawyer.

I wish I knew Ann Aguirre. She must be a very funny person. This is the weirdest sci-fi book I’ve ever listened to. Overall, the story goes along as you would expect: unconventional couple falls in love, risks all to overcome terrible odds, and triumphs. What I loved was the inter species-interplanetary love story. Aguirre’s aliens are delightful, and her well adjusted, feminist, earthling protagonist is endearing. I loved the talking dog, I even thought the alien/human love making scenes worked in the story (eg. not gratuitous). This is a fun listen. Enjoy!

I have read other reviews, and I disagree. I thought the narration was fine. I had no trouble with the jumps in time or voice, and I liked the parallel story of Iris and Alex. I particularly liked the way it ended. I easily lose patience with easy, sewn up stories, and I don’t like it when I can guess exactly what will happen. I thought this was a very good listen.

It is clear that significant research went into the writing of the War Nurse. While the history is interesting, the prose is clumsy and amateurish. I was very aware of Tracey Enerson Wood’s attempts to insert facts into her story. Frequent info dumps were didactic and kept the story from flowing. Sometimes Wood becomes repetitive, as if she couldn’t imagine another behavior for her character. Count how many times she describes Stimson’s stomach growling. The result is that I was always aware of the “hand of the writer,” and this kept me from becoming fully engaged in the story. Also unfortunate: Libby McKnight read as if this were a bedtime story. If Julia Stimson had a low voice, as Wood tells us, a reader with a more serious, lower register would have made more sense.

Philip Allen Green writes directly from the heart. That said, he is an intelligent writer who knows well how to craft a story. I also enjoyed his other book, Trauma Room Two. Not sure why these are in the Plus Library, but thanks for the listens. They’re wonderful.

The narration was good, but I wanted more of a pause between stories. I needed a beat to prepare myself for the next one. This is probably a fault of direction or editing, but I found it jarring.

Beautifully written and absolutely worth the listen. One reviewer lamented where the book ended wanting the author to give a conclusion. Personally, I loved this. From the start the reader is pulling for the characters. By the end you can imagine they will be okay. That it isn’t all sewn up is like life. You never know what’s going to happen, but you take a chance because if you don’t…

This could have been a good story had it been written better. It was probably based on the inhumane treatment circuses inflicted on animals and performers, alike, but the story was mostly ridiculous. It would have been so much more interesting had it been more firmly based on historical fact. How many gawking, malicious “rubes” can you have? How many evil ring leaders? How many cliches? The reader’s mispronunciation also frustrated. Additionally, hers was the wrong voice. I think it added to the silliness of the story. Glad it was free.

Sensitive and well developed characters. I usually don’t like chic lit, but this was a good and engaging story.

It is clear why this novel won the Pulitzer in 1965. It is a razor sharp story of the way racism destroys everything it touches: individuals, families and societies. Read it. It’s excellent.

Beautifully told. Absolutely worth listening to. A very imaginative telling of the massacre of the MacDonald clan by the Campbells at Glen Coe on February 19, 1692. The story is told through the eyes of Corhag, a young healer accused of witchcraft.
