Eloquent. Philosophical. Introspective. These are not the words usually associated with an autistic child. But in a remarkable display of courage and creativity, a boy named Tito has shattered stereotypes, and in The Mind Tree makes us question all of our previous assumptions about autism. For Tito is severely autistic and nearly nonverbal, and this is his story.

Great but better read than listened to
Revisado: 09-09-16
I'm autistic and love love love this book. It resonates in ways that are both heartening and heartbreaking. He finds words for things I've felt and couldn't express. Read this over Temple Grandin or really most other "autism autobiographies".
Skip the intro though, it's like the person writing it didn't read the book at all - they reproduce all the stereotypes, paternalism, isolation, and invalidation that Tito repeatedly chronicles and critiques.
My favorite parts are the last two ("The Mind Tree" and the poems), and I recommend starting there. The other parts are interesting and well written but the first half especially can drag on at times.
I also recommend getting this book in print rather than audio, just because of the way it's written, but the audiobook is great too, and the narration is fantastic.

Historia
Each day we face a barrage of images and messages from society and the media telling us who, what, and how we should be. We are led to believe that if we could only look perfect and lead perfect lives, we'd no longer feel inadequate. So most of us perform, please, and perfect, all the while thinking, What if I can't keep all of these balls in the air? Why isn't everyone else working harder and living up to my expectations? What will people think if I fail or give up? When can I stop proving myself?

infuriating waste of time
Revisado: 08-21-16
boring bland examples, cookie-cutter cliches that are somehow presented as "original", the same phrases repeated over and over, talking about research without citing or describing any of it, and (in my opinion the worst part), it's extremely judgmental while pretending not to be. has a few good ideas but other books on similar topics are much better (the antidote, just about any book on ACT).

Historia
Sometimes I feel like I have walked into the middle of a movie. Maybe I can make my own movie. The film will be the story of my life. No, not my life, but of this experience. I'll call it what the lady who is the prosecutor called me: Monster.

disappointed in the author's foreword
Revisado: 08-06-16
The story was well written and executed but I expected the author to more explicitly challenge the racism of the criminal justice system, not put the blame on individuals who "cross a moral line".

Historia
An honest and compelling memoir, Girl in Need of a Tourniquet is Merri Lisa Johnson’s account of her borderline personality disorder and how it has affected her life and relationships. Johnson describes the feeling of "bleeding out" unable to tell where she stopped and where her partner began. A self-confessed "psycho girlfriend," she was influenced by many emotional factors from her past. She recalls her path through a dysfunctional, destructive relationship, while recounting the experiences that brought her to her breaking point.

Not your typical mental illness memoir
Revisado: 08-06-16
In witty, sardonic, heart-piercing language and brutal honesty, Merri Lisa Johnson both represents and deconstructs "borderline personality disorder". She talks back to clinical definitions, challenges pathologizing language, and reveals the humanity, suffering, and hope behind one of the most stigmatized diagnoses. A crucial read for anyone interested in BPD, but prepare to let go of your preconceptions. You might be left with more questions than answers, and I think that's a good thing.
