Historia
The Yellowstone super-eruption has put an end to modern civilization. As cities and countries continue to fall, the colony of Rivendell in the alternate Earth known as Outland looks more and more like the only real hope for humanity. But life in Rivendell isn’t getting any simpler, either. Bill and Kevin continue to discover new worlds; the population continues to rise; winter is approaching; and everyone has their own opinion about how things should be run.

yuk, politics!
Revisado: 05-14-23
Lost me at politics! Congrats, this will be only the second book I've ever asked for a refund for.
Technically, the writing is fine with good characters. Only two small technical errors that only people find of firearms would get (the AR platform unless otherwise modified is incapable of fully automatic fire and the M2 general purpose machine gun is .5 caliber, imperial...not a "fifty mil" FFS).
But the book devolves into politics and ageism. Shame because I was enjoying it up to that point.
Good buy author, you're on my black list now.

MOAR!
Revisado: 01-04-23
Cannot wait to get the rest of the series. If you loved Neuromancer you'll be into this series as well, I think it tries very hard to pay homage to it...and nails it. I will say that it tends to stay within a comfort zone tech-wise but not much compares to Neuromancer's cutting edge stuff when considering the era it came out. This feels like a great story set in the Cyberpunk game if that helps :)

The galaxy is doomed. Monkeys may be clever and too stubborn to give up, but Skippy The Idiot Who Got Played knows the harsh truth: this is a fight he can’t win. The odds are not only stacked against him, he was designed not to win this fight. Maybe he can salvage some faint memory of the civilizations that inhabit the galaxy, but those beings are doomed. Doomed. Including the Merry Band of Pirates.

bad, bad author! go clean garage!
Revisado: 01-04-23
C'mon Craig! Look, I get that this is the series ending written down all those years ago. But man, you needed to at least fill it out just a bit to match the story the original developed into or at least tie it in. I love this series like no other and this one left me feeling a bit cold if I'm honest. I know they can't all be winners or tens but man, for the finale to tank like this is sad and to me feels like Craig was bored and done and just wanted out ASAP. Which I highly doubt to be true.
... should have updated the ending bro, even if only to sync it up. I love ya man but this one is tough to swallow.

The Peacemaker-enforced ceasefire brought an end to the hostilities, but the Mercenary Guild’s moratorium on new contracts has given the other guilds time - and freedom - to redress long-standing grievances. It has also led to a mindset of “while the cat’s away, the mice will play”, and many are taking liberties they wouldn't have normally. On Earth, the Golden Horde continues to rebuild, because Sansar Enkh has a good idea of what’s coming.

Pretty good series but starting to get a bit stale
Revisado: 11-24-22
I like this series for several reasons. The characters are fun if a bit shallow and the events are creative yet also no-nonsense in terms of just get stuff done mentality.
That said, it's kind of slowing down for me. I think it's a combination of things from the plots to the narrator who does do a good job for the most part. Yet some of his voices are a bit, I dunno...lacking? I have a hard time putting my finger on it. I've listened to him on other works and enjoy his work...I don't know, it's just not quite working for me here any longer *shrug*

Good story but drug down a bit...
Revisado: 10-29-22
I like this series but this one drag on a little too much about the internal dialogue stresses George was dealing with for my liking. And I swear to GOD I think about 50% of this novel is nothing but the phrase "message from the flag"! If repetitive phrases bother you then either bypass this book or at least go into it fully aware. It's one of my pet peeves and I'm not exaggerating one but about how often it's used. I'd say to make a drinking game if it but it may lead to trips to the ER.
The shame of it is that the actual story (remember that?), is solid and leaves us wanting more. But, you have to see it through a haze of overly dramatic foppish drama with Mrs Also A Royal and her life. It ends up kind of assassinating her character in my opinion because she starts out trying to be tough, then going on to do something cool, but the in-between part seems ham fisted at best.
If you're a rabid fan I'm sure you are used to this author by now. However me, as a casual fan was put off by this one.

Disappointed in this one...
Revisado: 10-21-22
Loved the first book but this one has me doubting getting the third. Remember that fun catch at the end of the first one? Ya we don't get to that again until the very end of this one. Instead, what we are treated to is a good story... covered in ecowarrior Bible thumping. As in, animal lives are just as if not more important than homan lives level. It's simply too much for me. Which really is a shame because if you strip that away it's a solid story so far.
The performance was very good, I have no issues there.
Dear author, please focus on the emergent story and not so much about the hippy stuff kthanks.

Political SciFi with a military backdrop.
Revisado: 09-16-22
Not bad, not great. The story as it unfolds is actually pretty good in setting and goals. Where it breaks down for me is too much political background building and establishing the main character. It also suffers from what I call the Lazarus Long Effect in that of course the main character's family is wealthy beyond measure and oh, of course THIS person will make it on their own....and turns around and requires help from her family and family name at pivotal points throughput most of the story. I see what the author was trying to do but for me, it fell a bit short.
Also, dear reader, have you ever known anyone from the Navy or Marines who never swore? This book, about enlisted and officers aboard ship and deployed, never used any swearing. This is silly! The whole story reads as young adult fiction IMO.

Solid popcorn sci-fi story!
Revisado: 04-08-22
Not sure what other reviews are talking about but if you enjoy a solid guy saves the universe story with cool tech then you'll like this series. No, it isn't super thought provoking or dark and gloomy grim dark or even noble bright...but it isn't meant to be either. It's a popcorn movie level story and it does a great job. There's lots of action, humor, character development, universe building and, different twists in the plot to keep it fresh. So ignore the review who is apparently looking for some grand theatrical mindgasm or deep philosophical epiphany...just give this one a try!
