Historia
Jake Sullivan is a licensed private eye with a seriously hardboiled attitude. He also possesses raw magical talent and the ability to make objects in his vicinity light as a feather or as heavy as depleted uranium, all with a magical thought. It's no wonder the G-men turn to Jake when they need someoneto go after a suspected killer who has been knocking off banks in a magic-enhanced crime spree.

Didn't like it at all.
Revisado: 05-27-23
Let me first say, the narration was brilliant. Second, I really liked the character Faye. That's where it ended for me. I didn't like the story at all. It reminded me of steampunk, which is not my cup of tea. The characters' powers were called 'magic' when it was closer to what the X-Men had. It was all just very weird to me. But as I said, not my cup of tea. I won't buy the next book. I had considered reading the other series by this author, but I don't think I will.

Historia
Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden has had a rough couple of weeks. As the only openly practicing professional wizard in the Chicago area, he has squared off against a multitude of supernatural bad guys. Harry has won the day against demons, poltergeists, sorcerers, trolls, vampires, werewolves, and even an evil faerie godmother. You might think nothing could spook him. You would be wrong.

I like the series so far.
Revisado: 12-01-22
My mom loved this series and recommended it years ago. I'm just starting it and have read the first 3 books in a row. I think they're a little slow on action (though it seems to be picking up). Overall, I like Jim Butcher's style of writing I like that he includes all the 'monsters'. I see many people complaining about the narrator. I like him, he's what I think Harry would sound like. It almost sounds like an old radio show with all the modern doohickeys. He's very enjoyable I'm going to keep reading the books until I either finish the series or grow tired of it. I would recommend the books.

wasn't a fan
Revisado: 04-24-22
First, I love this series and the Callie Penrose series. BUT this book is weird. I’m having a really hard time getting through it. Usually, I finish the books quickly, but I'm dragging on this one. It's slow and draw out, not to mention it went in a strange direction. I keep wondering if I can just skip the rest of the book and move on to the next one. I think that's probably what I'll end up doing. Not only that, but I'm go days without listening. Typically, I listen to my books every second I can find, but not with this one. I see the positive reviews, so maybe it's just me. I don't think I can finish it, I'm just going to move on.

War is on our doorstep. The odds have never been so bleak. The Dark Goddess invades from the south, an unstoppable army of ghouls at her command. Darkwinter gathers in the north, their attack imminent. Rebel factions divide the realm, undermining Keradoc’s rule, and leaving Midnight ripe for invasion. And with every passing night, we sink deeper into the torments of our own souls, the secrets of the past as dangerous as the enemies of the present.

Not my favorite.
Revisado: 02-10-22
I read Sarah Pipers Blackmoon Bay series. I loved it. I was excited to start this series. A lot of sex doesn't bother me in the least. I read Laurell K Hamilton and love her. Anyone who is familiar with her books knows why I cited her.
That being said, I did not care for any of the three books in this series. I read the three hoping they would get better and they got worse. I need a story to go along with the sex. The third book was light on story & heavy on the sex. It could have been so much better. I won't be reading any more in the series. I will try another one of Sarah Piper's series bc overall I like her writing.
***SPOILERS BELOW***
I also have a problem with the main character's sexual attraction to her kidnappers. That doesn't sit well with me. That could be triggering for some. It wasn't for me but I don't like that violence against a woman was romanticized.
That's it that's my review.

New narrator
Revisado: 11-18-21
I'm sure the narrator is good in other things, but by the 7th book in any series, you've grown used to characters' voices. If you switch to a new narrator the story loses something. It's like starting from scratch and learning the characters all over again.

Revisado: 07-23-21
I love this series. I find myself laughing out loud and feeling bad for the main character as well as others. I love the hell b*stards and the Helicon. He's friggin' hilarious. The stories are great the supernatural creatures are awesome. I loved this book up until the Qanon nonsense. I'm going to finish the book and go on to the next one, but I really wish this wasn't part of the storyline. I was so disappointed to read that. Other than that I'm in love with this series. The narrator is one of the best. I'm just going to treat the Qanon nonsense as exactly what it is a made-up horror story.
Edited to add: there are other aspects in this series that seem to touch on 'real world' things. For instance, Blackwater & Eric Prince. The MSM & fake news. It's interesting how it's written into the stories. While I don't buy into the whole fake news thing I do think the media has its problems. I also wanted to reiterate how great the narrator is. I think his narration helps with the humor in the series. There is a lot of laugh out loud moments.

cannot get past the narration.
Revisado: 05-13-20
I've listened to all the Nava Katz books and LOVED them. The narrator was fantastic. But I am having a really hard time getting past the first chapter and it has everything to do with the narrator. I've listened to A Lot of books and she's the worst by far. She's a monotone valley girl who doesn't speak loud enough. I listen to books while I'm doing so many different things including while in the shower. I've never had a problem hearing the narrator. I couldn't hear her at all. And her inflection is flat. It's like listening to a valley girl tell you how to hook up your tv in a monotone voice. I couldn't take it. I will try it again but I don't think I can get through the book which makes me sad bc I loved the whole Nava Katz series and I love this character. I hope the author finds a new narrator.
