I had never read or listened to any works by Dickens before this. I would honestly say this is the best book I've experienced, ever, and I am no youngster (52 years old) and a fairly avid reader. Simply outstanding story!

The narrator of this version is also incredible! The voices are distinctly different for each character, and his voice pleasing. This adds more to the story than you can imagine. He is top-notch.

You simply MUST get this audio. I literally could not put it down. I think anything else I listen to is going to be a comedown, after this.

This book is an interesting and detailed insight into the life of the working class in England in the 1930s, as well as into the thinking life of the intellectual socialists of that time. Mind you, most of the predictions Orwell made about the bleakness of the future of industrialization, and the inevitablility of socialism's adoption were way off-target, but then he didn't have the historical record of socialism's abject economic failures to draw upon as we do today, since it was almost all in the future at that time.

Nevertheless the way he analyzes from every angle, the thinking of socialists and non-socialists alike, is fascinating. What an intelligent man he was (I know, I know, if he was so intelligent, why did he get the future and the workability of socialism as an economic model so wrong? But I already addressed that in the last paragraph). Also, the details he describes in the everyday are a testimony to his incredible way with words.

The narrator's snobbish-sounding upper-class British dialect adds a lot to the reading, capturing the spirit of condescencion that Orwell clearly had for all sorts of groups he describes, whether socialists or non-socialists.

A first-class listen. I almost couldn't put it down.

Narrated by Elves in Santa's Workshop?

When I started listening to this, I could not believe the voices of the people they chose to narrate this - especially the male voice. He literally sounds like an Elf or a Munchkin. The audio is not clear, also.
If you want to learn German from a castrato cartoon character, this is for you!

Good book - but TERRIBLE narrator!

I chose this book without first listening to an audio sample - big mistake on my part. Nothing against the book itself, but the narrator is a near-monotone.

Beware - do not buy without first listening to the audio sample to be sure you can endure this expressionless voice for 8 hours. I did, but it distracted greatly from my enjoyment of the book.
