Historia
"My father had more than 50 children." So begins the haunting memoir of Anna LeBaron, daughter of the notorious polygamist and murderer Ervil LeBaron. With her father wanted by the FBI for killing anyone who tried to leave his cult - a radical branch of Mormonism - Anna and her siblings were constantly on the run with the other sister-wives. Often starving and always desperate, the children lived in terror. Even though there were dozens of them together, Anna always felt alone.

Author held her own as a narrator
Revisado: 06-04-23
Usually when I notice an author is also the narrator I will immediately pass on the book due to past experiences. This time, I went for it and I was pleasantly surprised. Good book- worth the time!

Liked it more than I thought, BUT…
Revisado: 04-05-23
So I ended up liking this book a lot more than I thought I would, and I got it on a great daily deal, so I was happy about that too. The only thing they kept thinking about throughout the entire story was that none of the characters were likable. I wasn’t rooting for anybody, and honestly, I didn’t care what happened to any of them. That being said, I still enjoyed the book.

Historia
After moving from a small country town to Seattle, Heather Baxter marries Tom, a widowed doctor with a young son and teenage daughter. A working vacation overseas seems like the perfect way to bring the new family together, but once they’re deep in the Australian outback, the jet-lagged and exhausted kids are so over their new mom. When they discover remote Dutch Island, off-limits to outside visitors, the family talks their way onto the ferry. But as soon as they set foot on the island, which is run by a tightly knit clan of locals, everything feels wrong.

Liked the storyline
Revisado: 02-16-23
This is different than any storyline I have read lately. And I read a LOT so that says something. Character development could have been better, but I liked it for the most part!

I bought this book because it was on sale and I figured I’d give it a try- didn’t read reviews or anything like i usually do. I was pleasantly surprised- the book kept me guessing up until the end! Looking for more from this author now.

Characters were impossible to like
Revisado: 04-30-22
I usually stick to writing good reviews, but felt I should chime in.
I enjoyed the plot- it was one I hadn’t heard before and kept my interest. My problem is the characters- none of them had many redeeming qualities. I couldn’t root for anyone in the book.

Good story, awful narrator
Revisado: 08-29-21
The story was good enough to keep my attention, but the narrator was awful. No line breaks, barely any change in pace/tone/etc. It was really hard to listen to. Wish I would have read the hard copy….

Historia
When I arrive unannounced at my husband's studio in need of a shoulder to cry on after hearing that my best student, Alex, has died, I see a pair of wineglasses drying by the sink, and my deepest fear is confirmed: my husband is having an affair. Most women would fall to their knees in tears and throw him out of the house - but I just can't bring myself to do it. Instead, I go home and cook a healthy dinner for our children, walk the dog, and unload the dishwasher without complaint. I need this marriage to work to protect a terrible secret of my own....

I’m a few hours in
Revisado: 07-11-21
I’m a few hours in and I’m going to stop listening- I can’t go on. The main characters are completely unlikeable. It got to the point to where I told myself if the main character talked about her delicious and nutritious meals one more time I would stop the book. She did, so I stopped. It has nothing to do with the plot point, she just seems fixated on the fact that she’s a mom and she cooks dinner….. she said it like 10 times. Narrator was good, though.

Narration was awful
Revisado: 12-29-19
I wanted to like the story, but the narrator was awful. Dialog was read without emotion/pause/emphasis and it made the story hard to follow.... only made it half way through the book.

Historia
For Rose Gardner, working at the DMV on a Friday afternoon is bad even before she sees a vision of herself dead. She's had plenty of visions, usually boring ones like someone's toilet's overflowed, but she's never seen one of herself before. When her overbearing momma winds up murdered on her sofa instead, two things are certain: There isn't enough hydrogen peroxide in the state of Arkansas to get that stain out, and Rose is the prime suspect.

The narrator sounds like she’s talking to a kindergartener the ENTIRE time. I stopped listening- couldn’t take it.
