Historia
With some 66 hits under his belt, Tomislav Bokšic, or Toxic, has a flawless record as hitman for the Croatian mafia in New York. That is, until he kills the wrong guy and is forced to flee the States, leaving behind the life he knows and loves. Suddenly, he finds himself on a plane hurtling toward Reykjavik disguised as American televangelist Father Friendly. With no means of escape from this island devoid of gun shops, this country with absolutely no tradition for contract killing, he is forced to come to terms with his bloody past and reevaluate his future, to tragicomic effect.

This story is full of dry wit and a very engaging characters. I bought it without being familiar with Helgason's work -- I definitely want to read more.

Weaving together historical examples, scientific studies, and compelling court cases - from the border collie put on trial in Kentucky to the five teenagers who falsely confessed in the Central Park Jogger case - Benforado shows how our judicial processes fail to uphold our values and protect society's weakest members. With clarity and passion, he lays out the scope of the problem and proposes a wealth of reforms that could prevent injustice and help us achieve true fairness and equality before the law.

Great insight
Revisado: 09-14-16
The author presents tight arguments for legal and corrections reform. I thought his recommendations were intriguing.
While I enjoyed the book I did find one irony. The author warns of the dangers of human judgement and how it is full of prejudices and errors. I don't know if I'm the only one who has read this book and caught the author's transparent disdain for believers, especially Christians and Catholics. I wonder if the author is aware he did that?

Very relevant

I could either relate to or could imagine someone I know for most of the scenarios in this book.
However the bathroom/bodily function chapter was a bit much. Maybe Ben doesn't have to share so much.

A pep talk for how to squash other human beings rather than inspire w creativity. If I were a creature who knew nothing of creativity, I think I would rather study tax law after hearing this authors take on humanity's greatest capability. The reader on the other hand was brilliant. She can stay.

Historia
In this eloquent and persuasive book, Neil Postman examines the deep and broad effects of television culture on the manner in which we conduct our public affairs, and how "entertainment values" have corrupted the very way we think. As politics, news, religion, education, and commerce are given less and less expression in the form of the printed word, they are rapidly being reshaped to suit the requirements of television.

Revisado: 08-14-15
This book was written in 1984 and centered mostly on the effects and mythology built up around TV culture, however, the observations and insights can easily apply to the todays data society. Actually, after listening to this book, you can see what a joke my use of the term "data society" is.

One part biography, one part prayer book, The Life and Prayers of Saint Michael the Archangel is an essential book for any Christian. Saint Michael is the Defender of the Faith and of our Church. As Christians we pray each day that he stands with us through this life and beyond. Saint Michael the Archangel is the most revered archangel within the Church throughout history and today but his pre-eminence transcends the history of the Christian Church.

Great pithy books
Revisado: 01-10-15
This is the second book of this series I've listened to and they are great introduction to people (and angels) who you want to know something more than just name and association. These books are the equivalent to a well written wikipedia entry + something extra (prayers associated with that person).

The hundreds of end-of-time prophecies splashed across the consciousness from the time of clay tablets to our Internet have had something besides hysteria in common: every one of them has been wrong. Here is a survey of three millennia of apocalyptic prophecies, tracing one of the most remarkable threads of our cultural history: our long and unproductive fascination with apocalyptic myths and miracles that can solve our problems without requiring committed action in our own lives.

Disappointing
Revisado: 01-27-12
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
The narrator, Bill Andrew Quinn, did an excellent job. My disappointments don't lie with him.
What could John Michael Greer have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
John Michael Greer is obviously an atheist academic who presents himself as elite to anyone who has beliefs. When I read the description of this book I thought it was going to examine the abundant evidence that exists showing that dooms day predictions are faulty 100% of the time. While Mr Greer does go into exhaustive historical detail to present his argument, I found many of his
