Historia
Shanghai, 1912. Violet Minturn is the privileged daughter of the American madam of the city's most exclusive courtesan house. But when the Ching dynasty is overturned, Violet is separated from her mother in a cruel act of chicanery and forced to become a "virgin courtesan." Half-Chinese and half-American, Violet grapples with her place in the worlds of East and West - until she is able to merge her two halves, empowering her to become a shrewd courtesan who excels in the business of seduction and illusion, though she still struggles to understand who she is.

This was a terrific story. I felt like I was transported to another time and place, a guest or neighbor nearby witnessing. The voice actors were terrific as well. Thank you.

Historia
I’ve been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me. Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries.

The Character In Real Life
Revisado: 12-09-24
Is more fascinating than the romcom man he has played, and yet these are some of my favorite movies…. Fun listen this winter as I walked my dog to Matthew’s poems, whims, and dilemmas. Inspiring me to use the next month to think deeper about adventure I would like to tackle… thank you for sharing your talent and story.

Historia
War photographer Lynsey Addario’s memoir It’s What I Do is the story of how the relentless pursuit of truth, in virtually every major theater of war in the twenty-first century, has shaped her life. What she does, with clarity, beauty, and candor, is to document, often in their most extreme moments, the complex lives of others. It’s her work, but it’s much more than that: it’s her singular calling.

Nearly every line was challenging
Revisado: 11-02-23
This was a very challenging listen. She endured so much. For those calling it amateurish or not well written, that is not what I heard. Being abused, living in trauma sets an individual’s developmental skills and wellbeing back, and it is clear that her language and thought process is stuck in little girl mode as she struggles to figure out who she is as an adult without someone or a group controlling her. I hope she gets the help, space, and time to heal and express her creativity in a way that brings her satisfaction for her craft. To the next chapter!

William Waters grew up in a house silenced by tragedy, where his parents could hardly bear to look at him, much less love him—so when he meets the spirited and ambitious Julia Padavano in his freshman year of college, it’s as if the world has lit up around him. With Julia comes her family, as she and her three sisters are inseparable: Sylvie, the family’s dreamer, is happiest with her nose in a book; Cecelia is a free-spirited artist; and Emeline patiently takes care of them all.

Unprepared for this book
Revisado: 06-23-23
This book was a lot more intense than I was expecting, and touched a lot of nerves and serious topics. It was extremely well written. I could not put it down and also had to put it down because it was often too much to hold all the craft of a singular phrase or sentence at once.

Loved it all
Revisado: 04-11-23
This book was surprisingly great. I had not watched the show today or read the description prior to reading. It has kept me engaged through much outdoor exercise and driving, and added excitement to an otherwise dull winter. Thrilled to find out there are so many more very long books in the series. As for the negative reviews, I actually found the plot twists a bit of a shock simply because I had no idea what the book was about… but the comments bout how this got passed an editor shocked me more. These types of activities have gone on since the world began, and certainly abusers of power are not strangers to the ideas or actions within. To act like these things are not still happening or like the subjects should be avoided is naive. The book has a little bit of everything in it, and I was grateful for the style of writing as well.
