Trouble with narration
Revisado: 04-03-25
Unfortunately as an American english listener with some hearing issues the narration is too fruity and lilting for me to understand every word, so I end up having a hard time following. When the narration is full volume and clear spoken it's great but then it dips down so that no matter how hard I focus it's not legible. I like the regency flavor and appreciate the narrators staying in synch with the characters but it just lulls me to sleep.

I would have skipped this one
Revisado: 01-12-25
I'm hooked on the seires but this one feels like it was written by an underling that should have been supervised more. Or maybe he had a lot on his mind. Seems to fall back on shock value, which I usually just endure in order to get the good story and psychological realism. I'm still clicking on the next book in the seires though, just felt obligated to share my experience for others.
It might just be me, I'm kind of a stickler for realistic dialog. You'll be able to see the difference in the first hour. It doesn't get better.
PS: I'm halfway through Thunder Bay, next in the series. It's excellent.

Historia
Most people called it a cult. But for 20 years, Josh and Caleb called it home. In Paradise, there is no television. No fast food. Just long hours of farmwork and prayer on a dusty Wyoming ranch and nights in a crowded bunkhouse. The boys of the Compound are kept far from the sinners' world. But Joshua doesn't need temptation to sin. His whole life he's wanted his best friend, Caleb. By day they work side by side. Only when Josh closes his eyes at night can they be together the way he craves. It can never be.

Narration drags
Revisado: 12-17-24
I read this book years ago and loved it. I feel like the narrator is going too slow and savoring every word. I tried to increase the speed .1 but it gets tinny.

This is an extraordinary chronicle of the fifteen years, 1815–1830, that laid the foundations of modern society. It is a history of people, ideas, politics, manners, morals, economics, art, science and technology, diplomacy, business and commerce, literature, and revolution.

Revisado: 09-10-24
I've been listening for over an hour and it's just a sequence of history bits that don't seem to say anything about the devleopment of the modern world. I skipped forward a few times and it was the same. I feel like I wasted my money.

When Lord Wrexford discovers the body of a gifted inventor in a dark London alley, he promptly alerts the watchman and lets the authorities handle the matter. But Wrexford soon finds himself drawn into the murder investigation when the inventor's widow begs for his assistance, claiming the crime was not a random robbery. It seems her husband's designs for a revolutionary steam-powered engine went missing the night of his death. The plans could be worth a fortune and very dangerous in the wrong hands.

Narrator on autopilot
Revisado: 08-31-24
I was glad to see I'm not the only one put off by the narration. He seems to have something else on his mind. Good with the Regency dialect but not as in-synch with the content as he was with the previous book. I'll be sticking with the series though, I'm enjoying it.
Update: Actually not sure I can finish. This narrator is ignoring commas and periods, instead using pauses for his own sing song style, which is rude. I'd like to just listen to the story not his weird performance art.

Not sure if I can finish
Revisado: 07-13-24
Maure's self referencing and repetitive thoughts (documented by the author) is dominating the story. It's kind of interesting that she can't think of things besides work and doesn't keep food in her house but why would anyone want to hear it again and again? I like the story so I feel trapped, can't listen to more than one chapter at a time because I'm slick of the pettiness. More editing would be respectful of the readers time, leaving a more concise story. Just my opinion of course, it does give the book a kind of mundane realism.

Historia
Felicia, Lizbeth Rose’s younger half-sister and student at the Grigori school within the capital of the New Holy Russian Empire in San Diego, is caught between secrets and powerful family struggles. As a distant relative to the Tsar, she provides an essential service to him by providing blood transfusions for his hemophilia, and she is thus given rare access and dismissed as if cattle. At the Grigori school she is seen as a charity case, a poor orphan with no prospects and no sign of magical prowess—the latter which Felicia keeps purposefully hidden.

Can't finish it at the moment
Revisado: 06-16-24
I've been binge listening to this series but this one's a bit of a dud. I keep listening hoping it'll engage my attention but it's not happening. I thin one problem is that I've just been grinning and bearing the narrators Spanish and Russian accents and they dominate this story (so far, about 4 hours in), but it's the storyline too. There's action but it's padded with too much background trivia. Who cares what she buys at the store?

I liked this story alot, feels real and down to earth. I wouldn't like to live in such a gossipy small minded place but it's entertaining to read about it.
