Narration ruined the fun

It’s not the most original story but it’s entertaining enough. I can forgive a predictable story and typical character development of the genre but the poor narration was the last straw. The female lead voice is devoid of any genuine emotion; it felt like a female doing a parody of a female. And the lead male gave a good shot at the accent but it was a mess. This one is best kept as one to read.

There’s nothing original about this story. It’s well written, narrated beautifully, and even with all its predictability I found it quite pleasant. I often looked forward to listening to this on the commute home or when I had a spare moment between chores and each time I enjoyed being whisked into the world of the gods, even if it was a familiar story,

I try really hard to listen to the sample and figure out whether or not, I can listen to the narrator. I thought I could do it because her voice isn’t high or pitchy, or over theatrical, but it is very blasé and almost nonchalant, which does the content a great injustice. I found the information refreshing, but this is one that you buy. I do believe you will reference it again and again, but you won’t listen to it more than once.

I generally like Marianne Williamson. She has a practical spirituality that she credits with her studies from A Course in Miracles. Despite the Bible being the basis for A Course in Miracles, Williamson has a way of removing the dogma and zeroing in on the humanity of being and growing into a good human. But, this is not that book. I was absolutely horrified when, she encourage letter writing from the Skinny Self to berate and really let the Fat Self have it. And equally, there's an exercise where the Fat Self writes a letter to Skinny Self about the pain of the journey. I suppose this seems radical but it assumes there's a level of self-hatred that simply isn't true for everyone...certainly not for me. it left such a misguided, bitter taste to my core that I couldn't listen beyond the chapter which is early on, maybe within 1-3 chapters? I don't even know, it was so bad I have removed this experience from my active memory.

I was drawn to the title and having some familiarity with Zakroff's work, I was fully expecting this to be one of my keepers; a solid go-to that I would reference regularly but that was not the case for me. The reviews are stellar, and while I did listen to a sample, I was hoping the narrator's tone would warm up but it never did. There's a disconnect in Zakroff's somewhat nonchalant point of view and Beresford's formal, "news reporter" tone.

I will say that I love the undercurrent of this book: There are no rules in modern witchcraft. Do what feels right for you, knowing there is no one right or true to way to this path. I think of some of the early days of the rising magic/witchcraft/pagan/wicca movement where books that prescribed exact words, rituals or initiations were not only the norm but the expectation from readers hoping to "do it right". But, those days are over...finally..,and this book gives you the permission you (think) you need to just make your own way. For that, I thank Zakroff.

Still, the disconnect of her words and the narrator's tone is too much to overlook. As was the feeling like I just read someone's personal blog filled with her opinions of the subject as well as her pet peeves and other things that she thinks are ridiculous. I suppose if you're completely unfamiliar with witchcraft, this is a good beginner's entry into the existing attitudes within the path, but don't rely on it to provide the fundamentals. Some would argue that's the point of this book, but it still feels like having to listen to a lot of talking without the benefit of learning.

I'm no stranger to goddess religion, myth, or the movement itself but this body of work renewed my spirit. Sophie taught me how to see the values, lessons and gift of familiar goddesses through my heart, body and divinity. If you let it, this book will pull you in---all in and leave you the better for it! I particularly enjoyed the format of the content; an introduction to the goddess, what her archetypal lessons are, an invitation to meet her (and parts of you), meditation and transition. Beautiful!!

I have always liked octopuses but this smart, this amazing, this profoundly moving? I had no clue. I was smitten listening to the story of each octopus; their personalities, triumphs, losses...it's all so heart moving and beautiful. Sy's love for these creatures is obvious and sincere. Equally compelling are the stories of the human care takers of each octopus. Wilson became a fast favorite.

If you want something that will entertain you while exposing you to new and fascinating trivia, give this book a try. It was fun, sad, endearing, wise, eye opening.

I'm new to Thomas John. I first heard about him in Jennifer Wiegel's "Psychics, Healers and Mediums" and was intrigued by him. Now that Thomas has his own show "Seatbelt Psychic" and I enjoyed his personality and style, I was all in...but this book sucks. Here's why:

Narration: The narrator is horrible. HORRIBLE. If you can't do character voices, then please don't. The majority of the stories involve women and his female voice sounds like the stereotypical "drag" voice of a comedy sketch. Awful, shameful even!

Story: The stories are interesting but the writing itself needed a better editor. There's a lot of internal chatter that Thomas includes--my guess is to be able to relate to him as a regular person with insecurities and a temper that makes him human, but it also made him sound like a real jerk sometimes. Had I listened to this first, I would have no desire to see his show or support his work. Given that I saw his show first and like the person he appears to be I can forgive this book and chalk it up to one miss in a long career of impressive hits.

I loved this so much! Jennifer’s experience as a professional storyteller is what makes this such a sparkling listen. She understands setting, tone, expectation (and humor) and puts all of this into the story—and her narration. I grew up in a very intuitive household so I knew a lot of the people she wrote about, but a couple were new to me and I was thrilled to have new people to research. My only criticism is her use of repetiton to drive a key point home...we know, we get it, not everyone is so dense or linear that we can’t reach meaningful conclusions on our own. But, this is a forgivable tactic as the stories are so great!

Sonia has a very sweet, non-intimidating way about her. Sometimes her stories are all so convenient, and a little too happily ever after, but here's what I discovered: that's what happens when you ask your guides! I told myself to trust and try. First day in and already I had more "coincidences" than ever in my life! Now that had me invested; almost 6 months of putting Sonia's words into daily, sincere practice and I'm humming with good things!
