Not worth the listen
Revisado: 04-25-20
I love a good cozy mystery. I love English house parties. I love a gentle send up of English manners and class. Given all of this I thought this is would be a lovely diversion, It wasn't. The main character wasn't sympathetic at all, the plot was extremely thin, and there is no character development at all. Frankly the whole mess was just tiresome. I only finished listening to it yesterday, and already I cannot recall the denouement. Really a very forgettable and not enjoyable book. There are others in this genre which are so, so much better. The narrator was good though. She did her best with lacklustre narrative and dialogue.

But when Ruth Galloway arrives to supervise, she finds the museum's curator lying dead beside the coffin. It is only a matter of time before she and DI Nelson cross paths once more, as he is called in to investigate. Soon the museum's wealthy owner lies dead in his stables, too. I don't know why people are writing bad reviews
Revisado: 12-22-18
I really enjoyed this story, and the narration was great. I really don't understand why people left such terrible reviews. It was a very enjoyable listen. It was an interesting story, and it nicely developed the characters and the ongoing storylines. I've read some of these books out of order, and this one filled in some important developments in the relationship between Ruth and Nelson, as well as other relationships in the book, in particular the friendship between Nelson and Cathbad. Well worth your time.

Historia
With ravishing beauty and unsettling intelligence, Michael Ondaatje's Booker Prize-winning novel traces the intersection of four damaged lives in an Italian villa at the end of World War II. Hana, the exhausted nurse; the maimed thief, Caravaggio; the wary sapper, Kip: each is haunted by the riddle of the English patient, the nameless, burned man who lies in an upstairs room and whose memories of passion, betrayal, and rescue illuminate this book like flashes of heat lightning.

Bad. Just Bad.
Revisado: 09-19-18
The problem with this book is that taking what is essentially a self-help / psychology framework and claiming to be able to apply it to politics is profoundly unsound. The author also has a shaky grasp of the truth and of history, his book vastly oversimplifies complex matters, and he appears to be unfamiliar with the concepts of empathy, compassion and basic decency.

Delightful
Revisado: 09-19-18
This whole series is a delight. Light-hearted, engaging, fun. Easy to listen to and a great narrator. Great literature it is not, but with genuinely likeable characters and interesting plots, this series is worth the listen. The authors very nicely manage to avoid the irritating cliches to which this genre seems prone.

Disappointing
Revisado: 09-19-18
Excellent narrator - very skilled. However, most of the story seems to consist of the main character, Joanna, being told how clever she is and everyone fawning over her, and she responding by being smug. It would have been much more engaging just to see her demonstrate her skills instead of endlessly talking about them. It got a bit tiresome. The original Holmes stories did a bit of that, but in a much more light-handed and nuanced way. This can't compare. Also, there is too much Doyle-derivative material. I'll usually read anything in the Holmes-verse but I won't be reading anymore of this series.

A Bit Overdone
Revisado: 09-19-18
An interesting setting and a good narrator. However, the author seemed to think it was necessary to carefully explain the motivations, feelings and back story of every character - instead of letting the dialogue and action speak for itself.

Not as good as the first 4
Revisado: 09-15-18
I really enjoyed the first four books of this series but found this one to be really slow going. I lost interest at several points. The plot devices seemed transparent, and the main character started to grate on me. Such a shame, because I found the previous books to be original and fun.
